2013 Kingaroy Show
The first day of the weekend-long 2013 Kingaroy Show will be held at Kingaroy Showgrounds from 8:00am this morning through until late tonight. The Kingaroy Show is the biggest agricultural show in the South Burnett and this year's 106th Show could be the biggest ever. Most of today's major events will be held in the main Show Ring but there'll also be a wide range of pavilion exhibits on display too and (as always!) a very big Sideshow Alley. Special things to look out for at this year's Show include a Truck Show'n'Shine (today only); a Chainsaw Feature Competition that will pitch old chainsaws against new ones (today only); and Clydesdale and Bullock Teams (today only). Other features include a Ute Muster (tomorrow); the ever-popular Woodchops; wagon rides; vintage car and tractor displays; and much, much more. As usual, there'll also be hotly contested fields in cattle judging; a big range of equestrian events including all-day show jumping; and many other things. The Show's Grand Parade and official opening will be held at around 1:30pm and the Giant Fireworks Display will explode into life after dark, with the South Burnett Speedway running their V8 Late Model Queensland Titles in the evening. Single day tickets to the 2013 Show are $30 per family (2 adults and 2 children), $10 for adults or $8 for pensioners and high school students (primary school age children can get in for free), and two-day passes are also available for a litle extra. There's also free parking available in the grounds too. More info? Phone the Kingaroy Show Society on (07) 4162-5800 or email them.
2013 Boondooma Dam Yellowbelly Fishing Competition
The 25th annual Boondooma Dam Yellowbelly Fishing Competition will be held at Boondooma Dam this weekend, commencing at 5:00am this morning and concluding at around lunchtime tomorrow. The event - organised by the Boondooma Dam Fish Stocking Association in conjunction with a bevy of sponsors - will have adult and junior sections and numerous cash prizes for each weigh-in period. A licensed bar, BBQ and food and drink stalls will be operating for the duration and accommodation for competitors is available at the adjoining Lake Boondooma Tourist Park. Competition entry fees are $20 for adults and $5 for children 16 and under and all competitors will need to have a Stocked Impoundment Permit to take part. Last year more than 500 keen anglers wet their lines for a share of the $4,500 prize-monies and an incredible 1,300 campers packed the dam's camping grounds. This year organisers expect similar numbers or higher. More details and/or nominations? Phone John on (0427) 112-477 or send him an email. Want on-site accommodation? Then phone the Lake Boondooma Tourist Park on (07) 4168-9694 or email them. Note: This year's Yellowbelly has been rescheduled from February to May due to the Australia Day floods.
Domestic Violence Awareness Breakfast - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Saints AFL Club will be hosting a Domestic Violence Awareness breakfast this morning in conjunction with the Dept of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services. The continental breakfast will be held at 10:30am at Lyle Vidler Oval in Youngman Street, Kingaroy and there'll be guest speakers talking about different ways to prevent domestic and family violence. Admission is by gold coin donation but to assist with catering, a booking is essential. You can make one by phoning Gayle on (0431) 524-168 or Daniel on (0413) 853-103 or by emailing them. After breakfast - if you'd like to stay on - the Saints will be taking on 2012 Darling Downs AFL Runners-Up the South Toowoomba Bombers in their second home game of the season. The match will get underway at 2:00pm and everyone is welcome to come and cheer the home team on.
Lesser Evils - Nanango
The Nanango Theatre Company will be staging two performances of their latest production "Lesser Evils" at the Nanango Opera House at the corner of Elk and George Streets, Nanango at 2:00pm this afternoon, and again at 7:00pm this evening. The new play is an original story about modern life by South Burnett playwright Liz Schneidewin, and it mixes comedy and drama in a rollicking and engaging show that captivated preview audiences. Today's performances are Supper Nights and tickets are $20 for adults or $15 concessions. Two other performances will be held at the same time and venue next Friday May 10 before the season wraps up with a final $25-a-head Wine & Cheese Night on Saturday, May 11. Tickets can be obtained from the Nanango Visitor Information Centre at the George Street Energy Museum or by phoning (07) 4171-0100. Unless sold out, some tickets will also be available at the door 30 minutes before each performance. Saturday Rugby League - Kingaroy
The fourth round of the 2013 South Burnett Premier League competition will be held at T.J. O'Neill Oval in Youngman Street, Kingaroy today - and it'll be an A-Grade Triple Header to boot. Junior competitions between Kingaroy, Nanango and Wondai players will be held on Field 1 and Field 2 from 9:00am in the morning, but at 1:30pm the seniors will take over when the Nanango Stags will take on the Blackbutt Timbertowners in the first A-grade clash of the day. This will be followed at 3:00pm with a Reps Match between the Wide Bay Northern Rangers (which includes 8 South Burnett players) and the South West Mustangs; and then the second local A-grade match between the Cherbourg Hornets and Wondai Wolves at 4:30pm. So if you think too much league is barely enough, then this is a day you won't want to miss! Spectators and supporters are very welcome and a canteen will be operating on site too.
Saturday Soccer - Nanango & Kingaroy
The fifth round of the 2013 Evolution Solar South Burnett Football League will be held in Nanango and Kingaroy today. In Nanango, the so-far-invincible home team will take on the rapidly rising Gunners (and Gunnettes in the women's division) at the Nanango Sportsgrounds in what should be a scorching set of games. 2nd Division will face off at 12:30pm; Womens Division at 2:00pm; and 1st Division at 3:15pm. Meanwhile in Kingaroy, current 3rd place holders Wests will test Barambah's teams at Tom Alford Oval in Oliver Bond Street, with 2nd Division toeing the line at 1:30pm; Womens Divsion at 3:15pm; and 1st Division at 5:00pm. Both of these teams are very keen to lift their current standing in the competition ladder, so this should be a pretty interesting trio of matches too. Junior games will be held at Nanango today. Spectators and supporters are very welcome to all matches, and canteens will be operating at all venues too.
Moroccan Night - Kingaroy
Cake & Whimsy at 194 Kingaroy Street, Kingaroy will be holding a BYO Moroccan Night from 6:00pm onwards this evening (kitchen closes at 8:00pm).
