2015 Murgon Music Muster
The final day of the four-day Murgon Music Muster will get underway at the PCYC complex next to the Murgon Showgrounds in Macalister Street, Murgon at 8:00am this morning with an Invited and Walk-Up Artists Concert that will last until late afternoon. The Muster is being organised by the Murgon Rotary Club and features a wide range of country and bush balladeering talents. Lunch and dinner will be available in the grounds, too, along with an indoor bar. Admission today is $15 and overnight camping is available in the showgrounds for between $6 (unpowered) and $9 (powerted) if you want to camp over. Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experiences, strengths and hopes with each other to help solve their common problems and help others to recover from alcoholism. Dung Beetle Workshop - Kingaroy
A workshop on working with dung beetles to improve pasture productivity and sustainability will be held at the Kingaroy Town Hall Reception Room in Glendon Street, Kingaroy from 9:30am to 3:00pm today. The workshop will be led by Bernard Doube from Dung Bettle Solutions Australia and it will look at the role dung beetles play in improving soil health and recycling nutrients; increased pasture production; and the control of gut parasites, bush and buffalo flies. It will then move on to examine the differences between local and introduced dung beetles before it delves into exploring dung beetle identification and life cycle. The workshop will also include a paddock visit after lunch, so you should wear appropriate footwear and clothing for this. The workshop is being run by the Burnett Mary Regional Group and Landcare, and the $10 admission includes morning tea and lunch. 44th Annual Kumbia Melbourne Cup Race Meeting
The Kumbia Racing Club will be holding their 44th Annual Melbourne Cup Day Race Meeting at the Kumbia racetrack from about 9:00am this morning through until 5:00pm this afternoon (the first race leaves the barriers at 12:45pm). This very popular 5-card event is the only live Cup Day race meeting in the South Burnett and it always attracts a great crowd. As usual, the meeting will include a Fashions of the Field parade with prizes for the best-dressed man and woman and the most spectacular hat. There'll also be a bar, BBQ, and the Luncheon Hall in operation, along with the lively Wine & Cheese Bar, plus full Sky-TV race meeting coverage, a vigorous betting ring, and big screen coverage of that other race meeting in Melbourne. Melbourne Cup Day


Today is the first Tuesday in November: Melbourne Cup Day. This is a gazetted public holiday in Victoria and an unofficial public holiday virtually everywhere else in Australia. While nearly all businesses in the South Burnett will attempt to trade as normal - and all government and public offices will be open for the daily grind - the majority of people will either be taking a bit of time out or abandoning any pretence of following a normal day's routine from about noon onwards. As usual, the South Burnett will be celebrating the occasion with a number of Melbourne Cup Day functions along with the Kumbia Race Club's annual Melbourne Cup Day Race Meeting (see entry immediately below): a really great bush race meeting that's become something quite special to all of us over the years. But if you can't make it trackside at Kumbia, then here's how the rest of us will be celebrating our uniquely Australian love of the turf around our region today:

Kingaroy Swimming Pool Re-Opens Today
The Kingaroy Swimming Pool - which has been undergoing extensive repairs over the winter months - will re-open to the public today for the 2015-2016 swimming season. In response to public requests, the refurbished pool will have shade sails over the Toddler's Pool and the grassed area.

Blackbutt Camera Club Meeting
The Blackbutt Camera Club will be holding a meeting at the Uniting Church Hall in Coulson Street, Blackbutt from 4:00pm to 8:00pm this evening. The club meets on the first and third Wednesdays of every month except December and January. The first Wednesday is devoted to practical photography (bring your own camera and equipment) and the third Wednesday to a review of those images and talks and tips on software (bring your laptop), followed by a committee meeting at 7:00pm. The South Burnett Pony Clubs Gymkhana - one of the region's major annual equestrian competitions - will be held at the Kumbia Sportsgrounds from 8:30am this morning. The Gymkhana will feature eight separate classes of events for riders aged between 6 and 25 and will award ribbons to 5th place, points to 10th, and medallions to 3rd place in each age group. Stolen Wages Community Meeting - Cherbourg
The Stolen Wages Reparations Taskforce will be holding a community meeting from 10:30am to 12:30pm this morning at the Cherbourg Community Hall to gather public feedback about a State Government proposal to allocate $21 million to compensate Indigenous people whose wages and savings were controlled by past Queensland Governments under the Protection Acts: money which later vanished without a trace. Barambah Shed Men Meeting - Boondooma

Queensland Rally Championship - Benarkin
The final round of the 2015 Queensland Rally Championship will be run on forestry roads between Benarkin and Yarraman today, with 28 drivers competing for line honours over a 290km course. Spectators are welcome to witness the race's start at the Benarkin State School at 12:00 noon - the school's P&C will be supplying food and drinks. There are also three spectator points along the rally route. Two are within a 10-minute drive of the main service park at Benarkin State School, and the final one is at Yarraman (information about these will be provided to people who watch the race start). The Blackbutt & District Tourism and Heritage Association will be hosting a Mayor's Fundraising Luncheon at the Blackbutt Memorial Hall in Coulson Street, Blackbutt at 12:00 noon today, with Hugh Lunn and Mal Anderson as special guest speakers. White Ribbon Day Breakfast - Kingaroy
A White Ribbon Day Breakfast jointly sponsored by the South Burnett District Law Association and the Rotary Club of Kingaroy will be held at SB Care at the corner of Kingaroy and Avoca Streets in Kingaroy (opposite SuperIGA) at 6:45am (for a 7:00am start) this morning. Special guest speaker Jim Sloane from the Graham House Community Centre in Murgon will talk about domestic violence and strategies that can be used to combat it while guests tuck into a gourmet buffet breakfast. The breakfast is part of a fundraising drive to put together $5000 for domestic violence intervention and support programs in the South Burnett, and tickets are $30 per person or $300 per table of 10. The Belle and Beau Ball started many years ago as a way of assessing the high school students for their HPE dance unit, and once again Bell P10 State School students from years 4 to 10 are being taught old time dances and bush dances to perform on the night. This is a celebratory night chosen by the year 10’s as a way to finish their schooling at Bell P10. The U16 Motorcycle Speedway Queensland State Titles will be held in the centre ring of Kingaroy Showgrounds in Youngman Street, Kingaroy this evening. The Titles are being hosted by the recently-formed Kingaroy Junior Motorcycle Speedway Club, and a minimum of 16 riders will compete, with 4 riders per heat. These markets are only held twice a year and are a crowd-pleaser with a lots of stalls offering everything from fresh produce through to coffee and tea, cakes and baked goods, plants and bric-a-brac. There'll also be a great steak sandwiches and hot chips on offer; a raffle; background music; a pop-up hairdresser; and fun competitions for adults and children. Bunya Mountains Markets
The monthly Bunya Mountains Markets will also be running at Dandabah in the Bunya Mountains today. The markets feature up to 30 stands selling quality, locally-produced fresh produce, arts and crafts and they'll be operating from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Local cafes like Poppies On The Hill and The Bunya Mountains Cafe will be offering special Market Day menus and morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas (as well as Seafood Sunday at Lyrics licensed restaurant - see entry above), and walking trail maps will be available from both cafes, the Bunya Mountains General Store and market stalls if you'd like to take a walk through the adjoining National Park.

Blackbutt Christmas Festival
Today is the first day of the week-long Blackbutt Christmas Festival, and at 2:00pm this afternoon this 15 year old event will kick off when this year's Christmas Mural - created by Blackbutt State School students - is unveiled at the Blackbutt Memorial Hall in Coulson Street. There'll be free ice creams and drinks for children to accompany the unveiling, and everyone is welcome. The Christmas Festival will continue daily until next Sunday, December 6.

Putting The Zap Back Into Landcare - Wondai
The Burnett Mary Regional Group and Landcare will be jointly sponsoring an all-day workshop at the Wondai Diggers Club in Mackenzie Street, Wondai from 9:30am to 3:30pm today. If you're heading up to the Bunya Mountains today, go via Maidenwell and you can browse the new Maidenwell Car Boot Sales And Market Stalls at the Maidenwell Sportsgrounds (just next to the Rural Fire Brigade HQ in the heart of town) between 8:00am and 12:00 noon. These markets offer car boot sales plus a variety of market stalls selling various goods and wares including wood fired pizza, fruit and veg, plants, jams and pickles, cakes, bric-a-brac, books and second hand goodies, crafts and lots more (even face painting for children). Open Jump Day - Nanango
The Nanango Hack & Pony Club will be holding an Open Jump Day at the Nanango Pony Club Grounds inside the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street, Nanango from 8:00am until late today. This is an "unofficial" day so Pony Club membership isn't required, but participants will need to comply with the club's rules (particularly dress rules and safety procedures) and judging will be carried out by Pony Club judges. The 15th annual Blackbutt Christmas Festival will be officially opened with a Wine, Cheese and Art Night at the Blackbutt Community Hall in Coulson Street, Blackbutt at 6:00pm this evening. Tonight's get-together is sponsored by the South Burnett Regional Council and will feature a welcome address by South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann, displays by local artists and craft workers, wines from Kingsley Grove Estate and food from the Bunya Nut Cafe. Rising Stars Playgroup - Yarraman
