Work has begun on commissioning the first six turbines from Stage 1 at the Wambo wind farm

A Wambo spokesperson said these turbines were now moving into a testing phase which would continue over the next six months.

They will produce a small amount of energy during this phase which will feed into the Queensland grid.

This follows the successful energisation of the new Powerlink substation, which connects the Wambo wind farm to the electricity grid.

A total of 18 turbine towers have now been erected.

Deliveries of components from the Port of Brisbane restarted on May 21 following the incident at the Mount Crosby Road overpass on May 16.

The Wambo Wind Farm is being built in two stages, and will eventually consist of 83 wind turbines and generate more than 500MW of power.

Stanwell CEO Michael O’Rourke said the energisation and commissioning process of Wambo Wind Farm’s first turbines was a significant milestone.

“It’s been over two years since construction started, to get to this point and to see the first blades of the first turbines now spinning and producing renewable energy for the first time is an incredible moment,” Mr O’Rourke said.

“Stanwell is delivering the project in partnership with Cubico. Under the joint venture, Stanwell will own half of the energy produced and purchase the rest of the power from Cubico under a 15-year agreement.

“Once stages 1 & 2 are complete, Wambo Wind Farm will produce enough electricity to power the equivalent of 312,000 homes, supporting our industrial and commercial customers and feeding energy into the National Electricity Market.”
