Construction of the 42-turbine Stage 1 of the Wambo Wind Farm is expected to begin in April.

This follows the the signing of an agreement with Powerlink to begin connection works for the project.

Powerlink chief executive Paul Simshauser said on Friday the corporation would be starting initial on-ground works, ahead of full construction.

The project has been under development by Cubico Sustainable Investments and Renewable Energy Partners (REP) since 2017.

Last year Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced the the State Government-owned Stanwell Corporation would also come on board as a 50 per cent partner.

Stage 1 of the 252MW wind farm, near the existing Coopers Gap Wind Farm, will be developed by the joint venture and built by international wind farm construction firm, Vestas.

Stanwell and Cubico have also entered into a memorandum of understanding to develop Stage 2 of the project, potentially doubling the capacity of the wind farm to more than 500MW.

Wambo is expected to be begin commercial operations in late 2025.

Stanwell CEO Michael O’Rourke said the Wambo project was a landmark investment for Stanwell.

“Stanwell’s joint ownership of the project means we will also have Stanwell employees involved in the operation and maintenance of the wind turbines, opening up fantastic new career opportunities for our people,” Mr O’Rourke said.

Stanwell is currently in discussions with large industrial customers to link them with renewable energy generated by the project.

Cubico spokesperson David Smith said the group had developed a local content charter that committed the group to a procurement process that provided maximum opportunity for companies in the neighbouring area to be involved.

The $192.5 million project is backed by the State Government’s Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund.

A public information forum about the wind farm will be held on Wednesday, March 8, from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at Jandowae Memorial Hall.
