Gympie Regional Council has secured State Government funding to restore key sections of the Kilkivan To Kingaroy Rail Trail.
A Council spokesperson said the State Government had committed funding to repair and improve a 9km section of the trail.
The project will include the installation of new culverts, construction of concrete riverbed crossings, erosion repairs and the replacement of 10 pedestrian gates with cattle grids to improve access.
“The Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail draws visitors from across Queensland and supports local businesses along the way,” Gympie Mayor Glen Hartwig said.
“This investment will restore sections of the trail that have deteriorated over time, making it safer, more accessible and more enjoyable for everyone who uses it.”
Mayor Hartwig said the funding reflected Council’s ongoing commitment to protecting and growing the region’s rail trail network as a major tourism and recreational asset.
“The rail trails are great assets for our region, providing valuable recreational and open spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy,” he said.
“We appreciate the Queensland Government’s continued investment in or region and the infrastructure that encourages our community to enjoy the beautiful place in which we live while also helping to grow our tourism industry- an important pillar for economic growth.”
The South Burnett Rail Trail Users Association has been lobbying for some time for upgrades to the Gympie Regional Council’s section of the rail trail, especially between the South Burnett Regional Council border and the township of Goomeri.
