Anzac Day

Today is Anzac Day, the day when the nation pauses to remember the sacrifices of thousands of Australians who have fought for the democratic principles our country is committed to in conflicts all over the world. Most South Burnett businesses will either be closed completely today or operating on restricted hours (ie from noon onwards) as a mark of respect. Anzac Day commemorative services will be held throughout the region from 4:27am onwards: the same time the original Anzacs began their assault on the beaches of Gallipoli 106 years ago. Here's where they'll be held:

  • Blackbutt-Benarkin will be marking Anzac Day with a Dawn Service at the War Memorial in Coulson Street at 4:27am, which will be followed by a Gunfire Breakfast at the rear of the nearby Radnor Hotel at 6:00am. At 10:40am, there will be a march from Muir Street to the War Memorial, which will be followed by a Commemoration Service at 11:00am, followed by a free sausage sizzle in Les Muller Park courtesy of Blackbutt RSL and the Blackbutt-Benarkin Lions Club, plus two-up games at the Radnor to raise funds for Legacy.

  • Bell will be holding an Anzac Day Commemoration Service at the Bell War Memorial at the corner of the Bunya Highway and Dennis Street at 6:00am, followed by a breakfast at the RSL in Ensor Street. Everyone is welcome.

  • Boondooma and Durong will hold a commemoration and wreath-laying service at 9:00am at Boondooma Homestead at 8262 Durong-Mundubbera Road.

  • Bunya Mountains will hold a commemoration and wreath-laying service at the Lone Pine located across the road from the National Parks Office in Bunya Avenue, Dandabah at 8:00am.

  • Cherbourg will hold a Rally at 7:45am and and Service at 8:00am. The march will begin at Barambah Avenue and will be followed by a Commemorative Service at the War Memorial opposite the Ration Shed Museum, and then morning tea at the Ration Shed.

  • Cooyar will mark Anzac Day with a march from Cooyar Memorial Hall on the New England Highway at 10:00am to the Cooyar War Memorial further along the highway for a Commemorative Service, which will be followed by a community morning tea at the nearby Cooyar Hotel (BYO plate of food to share).

  • Goomeri will hold its traditional Dawn Service at 5:15am at the War Memorial Clock on the Burnett Highway. This will be followed by a Gunfire Breakfast at the Grand Hotel, and then a pilgrimage to the war graves at Goomeri Cemetery in Goomeri West Road at 7:30am (participants should meet at the cemetery's gates). At 9:45am, a March will be held from Dickinson's Park to the cenotaph for wreath-laying, followed by a Commemorative Service at the Hall Of Memory in Boonara Street. More details?   • Hivesville will hold a Dawn Service in Main Street at 5:30am, followed by a community breakfast in Memorial Park opposite the Hivesville Hotel.

  • Kilkivan will mark Anzac Day with a Dawn Service at the Anzac Park in Bligh Street at 5:30am. This will be followed by a march along Bligh Street at 10:00am from Memorial Park back to Lions Park for a Commemoration Service at 11:00am which will be followed by a community lunch at Kilkivan Hall around noon.

  • Kingaroy will hold a Dawn Service at the rotunda in Memorial Park at 4:28am, followed by a pilgrimage to the War Service Graves at Taabinga Cemetery at 8:00am. At 10:30am, marchers taking part in the annual march should assemble at Kingaroy RSL for an 11:00am march to Memorial Park, where there will be a citizen's observance at 11:15am.

  • Kumbia will mark Anzac Day with a 6:00am Dawn Service at the monument outside Kumbia Hall, followed at 6:30am with a Gunfire Breakfast inside the Hall. At 9:00am there will be a march along Bell Street to the Hall, which will be followed by a Commemorative Service and then a community morning tea.

  • Linville will host a Dawn Service for Linville and Moore residents at the cenotaph in George Street at 5:00am this morning.

  • Maidenwell will mark Anzac Day with a QCWA morning tea at Maidenwell Hall at 9:30am, followed by a wreath laying at the Maidenwell War Memorial at 10:30am.

  • Manumbar will commemorate Anzac Day with a Dawn Service at the Manumbar Campdraft Grounds at 3896 Manumbar Road at 5:45am this morning.

  • Murgon will hold a rum and milk fellowship in the Diggers Room of Murgon RSL at 4:45am, followed by a Dawn Service at the Murgon War Memorial at 5:30am, and then a Gunfire Breakfast back at the Diggers Room to wrap things up. Later in the morning, marchers in the annual Anzac Day parade should assemble in the RSL's rear car park at 9:00am for a 9:45am step off. The parade will be followed by a Commemoration Service and wreath laying at the Memorial at 10:00am, and then refreshments in the Diggers Room. Mr Brock Kiehne will be this year's special guest speaker at the service.

  • Nanango will hold a fellowship for RSL Sub-branch members and their families, visiting veterans and ex defence personnel at Tara's Hall at 5:00am, then a march from the RSL to the Memorial at 5:20am, where a Dawn Service will be held at 5:30am. This will be followed by a Gunfire Breakfast back at Tara's Hall, and then a pilgrimage to the Veterans Graves at Nanango Cemetery at 7:00am. After this, participants in the annual Anzac Day march should assemble in Howlett Lane at 8:15am for an 8:45am step off, followed by a Commemoration Service at the War Memorial at the corner of Drayton and Henry Streets at 9:00am.

  • Proston will hold a Dawn Service at the Proston RSL Rooms in Collingwood Street at 5:30am.

  • Widgee will hold a Dawn Service at 6:00am at the Widgee Cenotaph in Webb Park, followed by a gold coin donation community breakfast at the Memorial Hall.

  • Wondai will hold a Dawn Service at 5:00am, which will be accompanied by a march from the Post Office along Mackenzie Street to the War Memorial outside Wondai Town Hall. At 8:00am there will be a pilgrimage to the War Service Graves at the Wondai Cemetery, and this will be followed at 10:00am by a second march from Wondai Post Office along Mackenzie Street to the War Memorial for a Commemoration Service and wreath laying.

  • Wooroolin will hold its traditional Anzac Day March along the Bunya Highway at 11:15am this morning, followed by a Commemoration Service at the Wooroolin Memorial Hall at 11:30am.

  • Woolooga will be holding a Commemoration Service at Woolooga Hall at 10:00am. The service will be preceded by a march (at 9:30am) and will be followed by a light community lunch.

  • Yarraman will hold a Dawn Service at the Cenotaph in Memorial Park at 6:00am, followed by a gold coin donation breakfast at the Yarraman Memorial Hall in Browne Street, and then a pilgrimage to the War Service Graves at 7:30am. At 10:30am, marchers will assemble in John Street before stepping off at 10:45am to attend the main Commemoration Service at the Cenotaph at 11:00am. This will be followed by a gold coin donation lunch at Yarraman's Memorial Hall from noon.
Wondai Anzac Day Race Meeting
The South Burnett Race Club will be holding their 49th Anzac Day Race Meeting at the Wondai race track in Baynes Street today in aid of Legacy - and after a sombre morning of reflection it's always one of our region's most popular race meetings of the year. Today's trackside action will feature an on-course TAB; live telecasts of interstate races and interstate betting fluctuations; a vigorous undercover betting ring; a great BBQ and bar; a "Poppies and Pearls" fashion theme; and a card of six races. Gates will open at 11:30am; the bar will open at 1:00pm; and the first race will leave the barriers at around 1:30pm. Everyone is welcome and admission is just $10. Reserved seating is also available for a small extra charge. However, you should bring cash because there's no EFTPOS facilities in the grounds. Anzac Day At The Royal
The Royal Hotel in Toomey Street, Yarraman will be marking Anzac Day with live music from 2:00pm this afternoon, along with Yarraman RSL two-up games at 2:30pm and Yarraman RSL meat tray raffles from 3:00pm. The hotel's kitchen will also be open this afternoon and evening if you want dinner or a snack, but bookings are advisable:: (07) 4163-8219.
Spirit Of The Bush Balladeers Muster - Boondooma
The final day of the week-long Spirit Of The Bush Balladeers & Heritage Muster will be held at Boondooma Homestead at 8262 Durong-Mundubbera Road, Boondooma today. This popular annual campout week features lots of Australia's top bush balladeers and poets along with walk-up artists. The Muster routinely attracts 700 to 800 caravanners plus day-trippers, and in addition to lots of non-stop music there's also great camp oven meals, a licensed bar, BBQ, stalls, and displays of vintage cars and engines, photography and historical items. Today's activities will feature a poet's breakfast at 7:30am, followed by an Anzac Day service at 9:00am. Admission to today's Muster is free. Manumbar Campdraft
The third (and final) day of the three-day 60th Annual Manumbar Campdraft will be held at the Manumbar Campdraft Grounds at 3896 Manumbar Road today, kicking off at 5:45am with a Anzac Day service before the first round of the John Smith Memorial Open Draft gets underway at 6:00am. This will be followed by Junior and Juvenile Drafts, and then the finals of the Open Draft which will conclude in late afternoon. Free on-site camping is available if you want to stay over, and takeaway meals are available too if hunger strikes. Admission to the campdraft is 100% free for spectators and everyone is welcome. Anzac Day At The Radnor
The Radnor Hotel in Coulson Street, Blackbutt will be marking Anzac Day with a $5 per head Blackbutt RSL Gunfire Breakfast at 6:00am, followed by Legacy two-up games at 2:00pm, Blackbutt RSL meat tray raffles from 3:00pm, and live music from Sue Ray on the hotel's rear deck from 6:00pm. South Burnett Pantry - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Pantry will be open from 8:30am to 12:00 noon today at 22 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. The Pantry is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Management and staffed by volunteers, and it helps low income families, couples and singles stretch their shopping dollar further. The Pantry offers $40 pantry hampers that contain most of the food and personal cleaning items that most people need to get through part of the week (though you'll need to shop elsewhere for extras or special items).
