Remembrance Day 2013

 
Today is Remembrance Day and a number of public services will be held throughout the South Burnett at 11:00am this morning to mark it. Everyone is welcome to attend these services which acknowledge the sacrifices made by our nation's soldiers in all the conflicts Australia has participated in. Today's Remembrance Day services will also mark the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice. Between 1950 and 1953 over 18,000 Australians served in Korea as part of a multinational United Nations force, and more than 330 Australians died in that conflict. After the Armistice, Australian troops continued to serve in Korea in a peace-keeping role until 1959:
Blackbutt:
A service will be held at the Blackbutt Cenotaph on the D'Aguilar Highway at 11:00am
Yarraman:
A service will be held at the Yarraman Cenotaph on the D'Aguilar Highway at 11:00am (wreath-layers should arrive prior to 10:45am). Poppies will be available throughout the week prior to Remembrance Day from the Yarraman RSL Sub Branch stand outside Yarraman IGA. Funds raised will assist the Yarraman Sub Branch to provide current and ex-service personnel and their families with vital advocacy and welfare services.
Nanango:
A service will be held at the Nanango War Memorial from 11:00am this morning (assembly is at 10:45am). The catafalque sevice will be performed by members of the Nanango Army Cadets Unit, who'll have a training day at Nanango State High School after the commemoration service concludes.
Kingaroy:
A Remembrance Day Commemoration Service will be held at the Memorial Park Cenotaph in Haly Street, Kingaroy this morning, beginning at 10:45am..
Wondai:
A service will be held outside the Wondai Town Hall at 11:00am this morning
Proston:
A service will be held at the Proston State School, beginning at 10:30am
Murgon:
A service will be held at the Murgon War Memorial on the corner of Lamb and Gore Streets between 10:45am and 11:05am
Goomeri:
A service will be held at the Goomeri Memorial Clock in the heart of town at 11:00am (attendees should arrive no later than 10:45am)
Kilkivan:
A flag-raising ceremony will be held at the RSL Memorial Park at 11:00am
Cards & Bowls Afternoon - Kingaroy
The Kingaroy Senior Citizens Club will be holding their regular Monday afternoon indoor bowls and cards competitions at their centre on the corner of Avoca and Kingaroy Streets, Kingaroy (opposite Super IGA) from 1:00pm to around 4:00pm today. South Burnett Parkinsons Support & Social Group Meeting - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Parkinsons Support & Social Group will be holding its regular monthly meeting at the Orana Lutheran Complex at 24 MacDiamid Street in Kingaroy from 10:00am to 12:00 noon this morning. The SBPSSG provides an informal support and social group for people with Parkinson's disease, carers, family members and interested community members and refreshments served during the meeting. Annual Nurses Reunion - Kingaroy
The Kingaroy Past and Present Nurses Association will be holding their annual reunion morning tea at the Uniting Church Hall in Alford Street, Kingaroy (opposite Shoppingworld) from 10:00am onwards this morning (doors open at 9:30am). There'll be a special guest speaker, and all members of the nursing profession are very welcome.
Wondai Swimming Club Meeting

Lift For Life Information Session - Wondai
The South Burnett Regional Council's Healthy Communities program will be holding a free information session about their up-coming "Lift For Life" strength training program at the Wondai Squash Courts at 98 Edward Street in Wondai from 9:30am to 10:30am this morning. This new program - which offers a six-month, low cost course in strength taining for people of all ages and fitness levels - will help prevent and/or manage Type 2 diabetes and other chronic health conditions. Lift For Life will hold twice-weekly, gold coin donation sessions at the squash courts at the same time on Mondays and Wednesdays (starting this Wednesday) and today's info session is designed to explain the course and answer any questions you might have about it. Sing Australia Meeting - Kingaroy
The Kingaroy branch of the Sing Australia singing group will be holding their regular Monday night meeting at the Uniting Church Hall in Alford Street, Kingaroy from 7:00pm to around 9:00pm this evening. The group have a welcoming, inclusive and fun approach to singing and meet every Monday except for school holidays. St John's Ambulance Brigade Meeting - Kingaroy
The Kingaroy Division of St John's Ambulance will be holding its regular Monday night training meeting at SES Shed in Glendon Street, Kingaroy from 6:30pm to 8:30pm tonight. The group provides invaluable training in eveything from first aid right up to Advanced Responder for both adults and cadets (aged 8 to 17) and new members are always welcome! More details? The Murgon Community Kitchen will be meeting at Graham House at 27 Taylor Street East in Murgon from 10:00am to 12:00 noon this morning. The Community Kitchen meets every Monday during school terms. Members learn how to cook simple, healthy foods in a communal environment; how to read and understand food labels; and how to save money by modifying recipes. New members are always welcome!
