South Burnett Mayor Brett Otto and Cr Kathy Duff have used the upcoming Federal Election to press the case for more investment in the region.
The pair met with Senator Bridget McKenzie and LNP candidate for Flynn Colin Boyce on Monday at a business roundtable held in Gayndah to discuss the Federal Government’s $2 billion Regional Accelerator Program.
The program is part of a $21 billion regional investment unveiled in the 2022-23 Federal Budget.
It is designed to create 10,000 regional jobs across Australia and drive economic growth
“We put the South Burnett’s priorities as outlined in our Advocacy Action Plan to the Minister and the Flynn candidate,” Mayor Otto said.
“Senator McKenzie took on board our issues regarding mental health as well as regional connectivity, and in particular mobile black spots at Boondooma and Bunya Mountains.
“We have to get in front of as many Ministers as we can during this election period to ensure our region’s issues are top of mind, and I have been doing this at every opportunity.”
The Mayor emphasised the need for Federal candidates and decision makers to take action on local government needs across the region.
“There has been a lot of talk about a better and stronger future and ‘freedom’,” he said.
“But we want to know how that plays out on the ground in the South Burnett in terms of dollars for roads, water, industry, telecommunications and social services.
“This is transformation time for the South Burnett region, and urgent investment is required to give rural and regional communities a fair go.”
