Singing, Dancing ... And Lots Of Fun!

Every Wednesday morning for about the past six months, up to 30 people gather in Kingaroy to sing, dance, play music, jump about … and basically have fun.

The “Rockin Our Abilities” music and drama program for people with a disability began in Murgon about six years ago, and grew so quickly that founder Sonia McMahon opened a Kingaroy chapter in January this year.

The Kingaroy group meets on Wednesday mornings from 10:00am at the Lutheran Church Hall in Youngman Street.

The participants are joined by their support workers and carers as well as a small team of enthusiastic Rockin Our Abilities team members.

This week they were practising hard for their upcoming performance at 11:00am on Friday (August 7) during the Open Day at South Burnett CTC’s “The Gumnut Place” in Murgon.

The group is also working on their repertoire for their big Christmas concert which will be held on December 19 in the Kingaroy Town Hall.

Last year’s Kingaroy concert was a huge success, generating enthusiastic applause from the audience.

The Murgon group meets on Monday morning at the Uniting Church Hall, 55 Gore St, Murgon, and hold a mid-year concert at Murgon Town Hall.

Sonia invited anyone who thought Rockin Our Abilities could be for them – or their family members – to drop into any of their sessions to check the program out and find out more information.

Footnote: “The Gumnut Place” Open Day on Friday, at 22 Gore Street, Murgon, will include site tours at 11:00am and 1:30pm, and a barbecue lunch from 12:30pm. Visitors will be able to inspect the commercial kitchen and learn about Gumnut’s catering activities (there’ll be products to sample and buy), timber workshop, commercial laundry, document destruction and engraving services.
