A number of records fell at Sunday’s South Burnett Express Rail Trail Relay running event in Kingaroy.
There was a record number of teams competing in this sixth annual event – 22 teams of between five and eight runners – and the winning team did it in record time.
The Mountain Goat Running Club, from Brisbane, set a new Men’s record, 3:14.22, for the 60km relay race.
The Express Rail Trail Relay, hosted by the Ashgrove Rangers Athletics Club, also doubled this year as the Queensland Road Relay Championships.
This helped to attract seven men’s teams, four women’s teams and 11 mixed teams, made up of both social runners and elite athletes.
Two South Burnett-based teams, Pinnacle Junior Ladies Team (gold medal) and Pinnacle Premium Ladies 1 Team (silver medal) dominated in the Women’s competition.
The Wondai Warriors did well to take home the bronze medal in the Mixed category, beating the fourth-placed team from Brisbane by just 22 seconds!
The visiting runners had a big weekend in the South Burnett.
On Saturday night, they enjoyed dinner at the Terra Rossa Restaurant at Kingaroy’s Club Hotel; and on Sunday, the South Burnett Mountain Bike Club put on a barbecue lunch in O’Neill Square.
The Visit South Burnett local tourism organisation also made sure every entrant went home with a souvenir bag of local produce and tourist information.
There were also random draws of Clovely wine bottles.

Children’s Race
The youngest runners weren’t forgotten over the weekend, either.
A special 850m children’s race was held along a portion of the railway land between O’Neill Square and Youngman Street in Kingaroy on Sunday afternoon.
