Council is planning hazard reduction burns around the region, including at the Wooroolin Wetlands

South Burnett Regional Council is planning to do a number of hazard reduction burns across the South Burnett over the next five months.

A Council spokesperson said prescribed burns would be undertaken in Council Reserves from March 1 to August 31.

“These operations are carried out by qualified and experienced operators. Prescribed burns play an important part in wildfire mitigation and biodiversity conservation,” the spokesperson said.

Locations include:

  • Blackbutt Tip
  • Nanango Fauna Sanctuary
  • Staines Road Reserve
  • Wooroolin Wetlands
  • Booie Reserve
  • Boondooma Dam
  • Coomba Falls
  • Gordonbrook Dam
  • Goodger Reserve
  • Maidenwell Reserve
  • Mt Wooroolin Reserve
  • Old Esk Road Quarry
  • Proston Reserve
  • Wondai Airport

  1. Thank goodness there is some action at Benarkin. When I was a kid growing up in the area the Forestry and Railway burnt off each year to reduce risk. This has not been done for many years and in my view if a wild fire started in Benarkin the whole village would be destroyed. Good on those who will assist.

  2. Thank you. The wetlands at Wooroolin are way overdue and the amount of build-up makes the entire area a fire hazard. Maybe we will be all a little more at ease next summer. I know many in Wooroolin held grave fears this summer if this area was to catch fire. There are many houses and businesses that no matter what preparations they did would be in dire straits if an out-of-control fire was to happen, ourselves included.
