South Burnett Regional Council will step up inspections of overgrown allotment this month.

At last Wednesday’s Council meeting, Community portfolio chair Cr Danita Potter reminded residents it was important to maintain their properties, particularly during the warmer months.

“Given the time of year, grass can grow quite quickly and become very long, to the extent that some properties become overgrown,” she said.

“We will be conducting overgrown allotment surveys throughout the South Burnett this month, and issuing compliance notices where applicable.”

Cr Potter said Council officers would also investigate any complaints they received about overgrown allotments.

Because of the requirements of the Public Health Act and the Environmental Protection Act, Council’s Local Law No. 3 requires property owners to keep their allotments free from overgrown vegetation and any accumulation of objects and materials.

If not maintained, overgrown properties can become unsightly.

They can also pose a potential health hazard, and are more likely to attract snakes and vermin.

Private property owners issued with a Council compliance notice are generally given a short time to tidy up the affected property themselves.

If they fail to take any action, Council contractors will do the work and the property owner will be billed the cost.
