Cherbourg Council plans to deliver a record $52 million capital works program over the next 12 months, but residents will be relieved there will again be no rises in rents.
Council handed down its 2026-27 Budget last Wednesday (July 1).
It includes an allocation of more than $27 million towards day-to-day operations; the capital works spend will deliver housing, infrastructure and economic development projects.
Mayor Bruce Simpson said the budget reflected Council’s commitment to supporting local families while continuing to secure long-term investment for Cherbourg.
“We know many families are feeling the pressure of rising living costs, which is why Council has made the decision not to increase rents for our community social housing tenants this financial year,” he said.
Mayor Simpson said one of the strongest features of this year’s Budget was the success Council had achieved in attracting external funding.
“Almost every major project in this Budget has been funded through State and Federal Government grants that Council has successfully secured,” he said.
“That allows us to continue investing in Cherbourg while carefully managing Council’s own financial position.”
Major projects include continued development of the Fisher Street sub-division, construction of new community housing, housing modifications for Elders and people living with disability, upgrades to the recycling and resource recovery facilities, renewable energy initiatives including new solar street lighting, and investment in Council’s operational fleet.
Mayor Simpson said these investments would create lasting benefits for the community.
“This Budget is about much more than dollars and cents. It’s about creating homes for families, improving essential infrastructure, supporting local jobs and building a stronger future for Cherbourg,” he said.
The Mayor acknowledged the work undertaken by Council officers in preparing the Budget.
“I’d like to thank our CEO, Executive Leadership Team and all Council staff for the work that has gone into preparing a responsible budget that positions Cherbourg well for the future,” Mayor Simpson said.
