Gympie Regional Council has awarded a $1 million contract to Protex Water Pty Ltd to upgrade the Goomeri Water Treatment Plant.

A Council spokesperson said the work would improve the plant’s performance and introduce a new softening process to improve drinking water quality.

As part of the project, a trial aeration process will also be undertaken at Kinbombi Ponds, where Goomeri’s surface water supply is stored.

The trial aims to improve water quality so it can be treated at the plant, which is not currently possible due to algal blooms.

Deputy Mayor Warren McEwan said the upgrades were an important step toward securing Goomeri’s long-term water supply.

Cr McEwan said an upgrade to the Goomeri Sewerage Treatment Plant would also start later this year.

“These works will deliver a modern sewerage system with improved treatment processes and increased automation, resulting in a more environmentally sustainable and cost-effective service for residents,” he said.

The works are scheduled to begin in mid-June with both water and sewerage upgrades expected to be completed by the end of this year, weather permitting.
