Cherbourg residents will face no rises in rent over the next 12 months – and animal registrations will also remain free – in Council’s record $58 million Budget handed down on Monday.

Mayor Bruce Simpson and CEO Chatur Zala released the 2025-26 Budget at a Special Meeting at Cherbourg Council Chambers on Monday morning.

It includes $26 million in operational expenditure and $29 million in capital works, funded mainly through grants.

Mayor Simpson said he was proud to present a budget focused on building a prosperous and sustainable future for the Cherbourg community.

“We understand the rising cost of living continues to put pressure on families and the Council alike,” he said.

“However, we remain committed to ensuring essential services and key projects continue without disruption.

“To support our most vulnerable residents, Council has decided not to increase rent for community social housing, acknowledging the economic hardships many households are facing.”

Other key Budget announcements include:

  • The construction of 23 new homes and the development of a new 53 lot subdivision
  • $6.2 million allocated to upgrades and maintenance of existing homes
  • $26 million to upgrade Cherbourg’s water supply system
  • $3.8 million to upgrade the recycling plant

Council currently has no borrowings, and none are planned for the next nine financial years.

Commercial fees to hire the Community Hall have been set at $500 and $150 for the Sports Complex (with a $200 bond and $100 key deposit).

Commercial and corporate properties in Cherbourg face a small rise in utility charges: $583.27 a year for water, $622 for per pedestal for sewerage, and $532 per bin for garbage collection.

“Community safety is another priority, so we’re installing 83 new solar-powered streetlights out the community, a significant step toward making our streets safer and brighter,” Mayor Simpson said.

“We’re especially excited about community-focused projects like our Jundah Gym, supported through DATSIP and Play Our Way Program, and the new syntropic farm, which will enable us to grow fresh food right here in Cherbourg.

“These projects reflect our commitment to building a vibrant, safe, and thriving Cherbourg.

“Our community is moving forward, and this budget is another strong step in the right direction, for you and for us all.

“Finally, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our strong Cherbourg Council management and also our hardworking, valued council team members who contribute across all our departments and businesses.

“Thanks also goes out to you, our community members, to our service providers, and stakeholders. Thank you for your ongoing support and optimism.

“Together, let’s continue walking forward, building a brighter future for Cherbourg. Many Tribes, One Community!”
