November 13, 2019

The South Burnett Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Corporation (SBATSI) has secured an $8000 grant to hold the region’s first multicultural festival.

The grant was announced on Wednesday by Multicultural Affairs Minister Stirling Hinchliffe.

It is one of 165 events that will receive funding of between $3000 and $20,000 in 2020 through the Celebrating Multicultural Queensland program.

“There are 21 events receiving funding for the first time including the South Burnett Multicultural Festival, Gold Coast Vaisakhi Celebration and Carina Carnivale – A Celebration of Cultures,” Mr Hinchliffe said.

“Queensland’s diversity is truly one of our greatest strengths and is certainly worth celebrating.

“This is now home to people from 220 countries and territories who speak more than 80 languages and identify with more than 110 faiths.

SBATSI chair Val McGrath said she was delighted to learn the new festival received the grant.

“We have a planning meeting tonight (Wednesday), and I’m sure the rest of our committee will be very happy to hear the news,” she said.

The new festival plans to run in Kingaroy on the third weekend of March next year.
