South Burnett Regional Council has announced the winner and runner-up of its Multicultural Art Competition.
Residents were invited to create an artwork representing multiculturalism in the South Burnett, with the winning artwork to be used to promote the South Burnett Multicultural Celebration which will be held on Saturday, September 5, in Kingaroy.
First prize has been awarded to “Bunya Calling” by Megan Theobald.
Megan said her work had been inspired by historic Aboriginal gatherings.
“My artwork depicts a bunya nut. At its core is the South Burnett, with the flags of its residents birthplaces forming the leaves and kernels,” she said.
Her artwork will now be used to promote the South Burnett Multicultural Celebration and a custom flag will be used to lead a parade at the event.
Megan will also receive $1000 in prize money.
The runner-up is “Many People” by Nerissa Meeks.
“In this Aboriginal artwork I have depicted multiculturalism in the form of many races, cultures, skin tones living together in one place, celebrating and learning together and knowing we all belong,” Nerissa said.
Nerissa will receive the $500 runner-up prize money.
Competition entries will be on display in the Kingaroy Town Hall Forecourt on Saturday, September 5, where people can vote for the People’s Choice award, sponsored by the Royal Hotel Murgon.
The People’s Choice award winner will receive $500 with the winning entry to be announced at the celebration on Saturday, September 5.
