Residents at Wondai Hospital’s Forest View Residential Aged Care now have a new way to get out and explore the South Burnett Rail Trail thanks to an innovative cycling project.
Late last year, the South Burnett Rail Trail Users Association (SBRTUA) – with help from a Stanwell grant – purchased an electric pushbike which enables a “pilot” rider to take two people at a time for a ride along a section of the trail.
A mountain of paperwork later, “Ricky the rickshaw” (it’s actually a trishaw) is now ready to go!
SBRTUA volunteer Kay Woodall took 85-year-old Forest View resident Graham Smith for the first ride on Thursday morning.
Graham was accompanied by Forest View staff member Sandra Rasmussen for the debut ride.
For the moment, the trishaw will be out and about just twice a month – at Forest View and the monthly Wondai Markets – until more pilot riders are trained.
The SBRTUA became a chapter of Cycling Without Age to offer the rides, and the routes to be used had to be approved.
Wondai Regional Art Gallery is also part of the project, providing a home for “Ricky” when it’s not in use and serving as a base for the Wondai Markets rides.
The rides are free, but as Kay said, a donation would always be welcome!
