Australian Dairy Farmers president David Basham … stepping down for three months (Photo: ADF)

Dairy industry observers were surprised on Thursday when Australian Dairy Farmers president David Basham announced he was stepping down from the role for three months “to pursue other interests”.

The South Australian dairy farmer only officially took over the role as president of the peak industry body last month after serving as acting president since May.

Prior to that he served nine years on the ADF Board.

It has been reported that Mr Basham plans to contest Liberal Party pre-selection for the safe South Australian seat of Finniss, where the sitting MP is retiring.

Terry Richardson, who has served as an ADF Business Director since November 2015, has been appointed acting ADF President.
