Japan has temporarily suspended live cattle imports from Australia after several dairy heifers tested posted to Bovine Johne’s Disease on arrival.

It is believed the heifers – which were part of a consignment of 300 animals which left Australia in May – had passed BJD tests in Australia.

The shipment left Australia from Melbourne.

Australian Livestock Exporters Council chief executive officer Alison Penfold said about 10,500 live cattle were exported to Japan every year.

Many of these exports are high-value Wagyu cattle.

The Japanese Government has given no indication how long the suspension will last.
