The State Government has snubbed the South Burnett and Toowoomba regions in a program designed to target wild dogs.

Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne announced on Thursday that $4 million would be available over the next three years to support projects in drought-affected areas to trap and bait wild dogs.

And $1 million would be invested in feral cat research.

However, he said priority for the funding would be given to Paroo, Murweh, Quilpie, Barcaldine, Longreach, Blackall-Tambo, Barcoo, Winton, Flinders, Bulloo, Maranoa, Balonne, Southern Downs, Western Downs and Goondiwindi council areas.

Every drought-declared council region in southern Queensland – except Cherbourg, the South Burnett and Toowoomba – has been prioritised in the wild dog program.

UPDATE August 28: South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann contacted the Minister’s office to check whether the South Burnett could apply for funding. He said he was told the South Burnett fitted the guidelines so the Council will be applying for funding under this program.
