Christmas has come early for seven South Burnett sport and recreation clubs who will share in a $40,000 windfall from Round 2 of the “Get Playing” and “Get Going” grant programs.

Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington says she contacted the clubs on Monday to let them know the good news.

“Seven clubs will share more than $40,000 in Get Going funding to provide better services and boost member numbers,” she said.

“And the South Burnett Little Athletics Centre will receive also $17,578 of Get Playing funding to improve their infrastructure and facilities.”

South Burnett clubs to receive funding:

  • South Burnett Branch Little Athletics Centre Inc ($17,578 Get Playing and $7879 Get Going) to construct an equipment storage shed at Taabinga State School, conduct come-and-try days and purchase equipment
  • Nanango and District Cricket Club Inc ($2352 Get Going) to provide Level 1 coach accreditation conduct come-and-try activities and purchase playing and training equipment
  • South Burnett Junior Motorcycle Club Inc ($8999 Get Going) to provide first aid and officials training, conduct four come-and-try days and purchase equipment
  • Kingaroy Rugby League Football Club Juniors and Seniors Inc ($8200 Get Going) to develop a girls team and purchase equipment.
  • Kingaroy Touch Association Inc ($3145 Get Going) to provide coaching accreditation
  • Burnett Softball Association Inc ($5350 Get Going) to conduct a come-and-try program, conduct coach accreditation and first aid training and purchase equipment
  • Football South Burnett Inc ($5065 Get Going) to provide coaching and referees courses

“Get Playing and Get Going are two of three programs that make up the ‘Get in the Game initiative’, a key election promise designed to get more children and young people involved in recreation activities,” Mrs Frecklington said.

“The Get in the Game focus is on promoting greater participation at the grassroots community level and supporting local clubs. This funding announcement will achieve that in the South Burnett.”

Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson said the response from Round 1 Get Playing and Get Going was overwhelming and Round 2 was even more popular.

“During Round 2, more than 280 Queensland clubs applied for Get Playing funding and more than 1000 clubs applied for Get Going,” Mr Dickson said.

“The results show that this was an area the previous Labor Government was clearly ignoring.

“But we are making it right with more than $24.5 million in total funding approved for Get Playing and Get Going following Rounds 1 and 2.

“It’s pleasing to see the positive outcomes resulting from round one funding and I look forward to seeing more improvements to our sport and recreation clubs state-wide.”

Round 3 of ‘Get Started’, the third program in the Get in the Game initiative, is due to open in early 2014. It assists children and young people with the costs of joining a sport or recreation club.
