Kingaroy-Memerambi RSL Sub-Branch president Don Davey with the vandalised honour roll … although the youths responsible weren’t ashamed to add their surnames, we have blacked out the names because they are juveniles

December 2, 2013

A 15-year-old Kingaroy girl and 14-year-old Kingaroy boy will appear in Kingaroy Children’s Court later this month charged with wilful damage following a police investigation into graffiti scrawled on the Kingaroy War Memorial.

The graffiti, which was written on the monuments in black pen, appeared shortly before the Remembrance Day service on November 11.

Three names had been added to the 1914-18 Roll of Honour on the main catafalque and graffiti of a sexual nature written on top of one of the other monuments.

Senior Sergeant Duane Frank, officer-in-charge of Kingaroy Police, said police issued two of the children on Saturday with a notice to appear in court.

A third youth had also been identified and would be dealt with by police at a later stage.

“It’s a disgusting offence,” Senior Sergeant Frank said.

Kingaroy-Memerambi RSL Sub-Branch president Don Davey couldn’t agree more.

He wondered why anyone would be so stupid – or so in need of recognition – that they would add their names to a list of soldiers who had fought for their country in World War I.

And sadly, he said, this wasn’t the only graffiti attack the memorial has suffered in recent months.

There was more vandalism at the area just after Anzac Day and as far as he was aware, these offenders had not been located.
