Murgon’s Corey Smith will be “going for gold” at an international judo competition in Amsterdam with the support of South Burnett Regional Council.

Corey won a Bronze medal at the same competition in 2008 and a Silver in 2010.

“Council is happy to support Corey’s trip to Amsterdam to represent this area in the Judo Championships. It will be excellent if he is able to return with another medal from this trip,” South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann said.

Murgon Judo Club president (and coach) Stan Munday said the club was very lucky to have such a positive Council which has supported every one of Corey’s trips to Amsterdam.

“We are appreciative of this year’s support, especially considering the problems our community has endured with the weather and floods in the South Burnett,” Mr Munday said.

Cr Kathy Duff said Corey was an amazing athlete and “an inspiration to others in our region”.

“He has been a regular competitor at all our local competitions as well as State Titles, Queensland International Open, NSW International Open and last year competed in the National Championships,” she said.

During the cheque presentation, Corey challenged the Mayor and Cr Duff to a judo tournament.

“We will just have to source a pink Judogi (traditional judo uniform) so Cr Duff can compete in her usual fashion,” Mr Munday said.

“We really want to thank Kathy Duff and Wayne Kratzmann for their support and we will cherish this photo of the presentation of the cheque.”
