Schoolgirls from Nanango and Murgon State High Schools joined local women at this year’s World Rural Women’s Day luncheon at Wooroolin Hall today.
World Rural Women’s Day was launched by the United Nations in 1996 to help raise awareness that the majority of poor people in the world are women, and that these women are overwhelmingly responsible for feeding hungry men and children, as well as themselves.
The cause was taken up by Centacare South Burnett and the Queensland Rural, Regional and Remote Women’s Network in 2010 when they held the first WRWD lunch at Wooroolin Hall, with Queensland Governor Her Excellency Penelope Wensley as special guest speaker.
And in the two years since then, the luncheon has become an annual event.
Today’s gathering began at 9:30am.
Guests were able to mingle with one another over tea and coffee, inspect several stalls offering handicrafts, purses and jewellery produced by women living in the Third World, and listen to guest speakers before settling down to a two-course lunch.
This year’s WRWD theme was “Be The Change You Want In Your World” and each guest speaker addressed the issue in different ways.
There were also several raffles run, with proceeds going to help support rural women living and working in Third World countries.
Caitlyn Gribbin from ABC Rural was emcee for the day, and she interviewed a number of the women in attendance during the course of the event, which concluded at 2:30pm.
