Anzac Day
Today is Anzac Day, a national public holiday when the nation pauses to remember the sacrifices of tens of thousands of Australians who have fought for the democratic principles our country is committed to in conflicts all over the world. Most South Burnett businesses will either be closed completely today or operating on restricted hours (ie from noon onwards) as a mark of respect. Anzac Day commemorative services will be held throughout the region from 4:27am onwards: the same time the original ANZACs began their assault on the beaches of Gallipoli 102 years ago. Here's where they'll be held:

  • Blackbutt-Benarkin will be marking Anzac Day with a Dawn Service at the Memorial at the corner of Hart and Coulson Streets at 4:27am; and then a Commemoration service at the Coulson Street memorial at 11:00am.

  • Boondooma and Durong will hold a commemoration and wreath-laying service at 9:00am at Boondooma Homestead at 8262 Durong-Mundubbera Road.

  • Bunya Mountains will hold a wreath-laying service at the Lone Pine in the Dandabah camping area at 8:00am.

At 10:30am, marchers taking part in the annual march should assemble at Kingaroy RSL for an 11:00am march to Memorial Park, where there will be a citizen's observance at 11:10am.

  • Kumbia will mark Anzac Day with a march. Marchers should assemble at the flower garden at the northern end of Bell Street at 8:45am for a 9:00am step off, which will be followed by a Commemoration Service at 9:00am.

The South Burnett Race Club will be holding their 44th Anzac Day Race Meeting at the Wondai race track today in aid of Legacy. Today's meeting will feature an on-course TAB; live telecasts of interstate races and interstate betting fluctuations; a vigorous undercover betting ring; a great BBQ and bar; the Lady Luck Cocktail Bar; and a card of five races. Gates will open at 11:30am and the first race will leave the barriers at around 1:40pm. Everyone is welcome and admission is $10. You can also read more about what last year's Anzac Day race meeting was like and see pictures on our website. Note: Today's meeting will not have a Fashions Of The Field competition, and no buses will be running to the track - you'll need to get to the Baynes Street course under your own steam.
