Transit Of Venus Day - Maidenwell
- The transit of Venus will occur between 8:00am and 3:00pm today. This astronomical event - when the planet Venus crosses the face of the Sun as seen from Earth - is so rare that no one alive today will ever see it again. And to mark the occasion, the Maidenwell Astronomical Observatory, the Maidenwell Hotel and the Maidenwell Trading Post will be holding a Transit Of Venus Day today so visitors can enjoy a complete star-gazing experience. For $15, the Observatory will be making their telescope available covered up in a special solar film so visitors can see the silhouette of the planet Venus against the backdrop of our nearest star with their naked eye. They'll also be showing it live as it happens, projected onto a big screen in their 77-seat Star Theatre (and the entire event will also be available the next day on a time-lapse recorded video). The Observatory will also be offering special solar viewing glasses for $2 a pair. Meanwhile, the Trading Post will be crafting Devonshire Teas all day and the Maidenwell Hotel will be offering a delicious pig-on-a-spit lunch from 11:30am to 2::00pm. Bookings at the Observatory and the hotel are essential, though, and you can make them by phoning (07) 4164-6194 or (07) 4164-6133 respectively (and preferably by June 1st). You can also read more about this special event on this page of our website. Note: The next Transit Of Venus will occur in 2117.
