2016 Local Government Elections
- The 4-yearly local government elections for the South Burnett, Toowoomba and Gympie Regional Councils will be held today, and all voters in the South Burnett, Toowoomba and Gympie Regional Council areas are required to attend a polling booth and cast their vote if they haven't already cast a pre-poll vote at Council offices this week. Voters will be casting their ballots for a Mayor and a Divisional Councillor, as well as responding to a referendum on introducing 4-year fixed terms in State Parliament. For South Burnett Regional Council voters, Division 1 polling booths will be running at Booie Hall and the Nanango State High School Sports Centre in Elk Street, Nanango; Division 2 booths are at the Blackbutt State School in Crofton Street; Maidenwell Hall; and the Nanango State High School Sports Centre in Elk Street, Nanango; Division 3 booths are at Booie Hall; Coolabunia State School, the Uniting Church Hall in Alford Street, Kingaroy (opposite Shoppingworld); St John's Lutheran School at 84 Ivy Street, Kingaroy; and Taabinga State School; Division 4 booths are at the Uniting Church Hall in Alford Street, Kingaroy (opposite Shoppingworld) and St John's Lutheran School at 84 Ivy Street, Kingaroy; Division 5 booths are at Cloyna State School, Murgon Town Hall, Proston State School and Wheatlands State School; and Division 6 booths are at Durong Community Hall; Kumbia State School; Tingoora State School; the Wondai Town Hall in Mackenzie Street, Wondai; and Wooroolin State School. Yarraman and Cooyar readers (who'll be voting for Toowoomba Regional Council candidates) will find their nearest polling booths at the Yarraman State School at 17 John Street; or the Crows Nest RSL in William Street; while former Kilkivan Shire residents (who'll be voting for Gympie Regional Council candidates) will find booths at the Goomeri State School in Mactaggart Street; Kilkivan State School in Council Street; the Lower Wonga Hall; and Widgee State School at 2156 Gympie-Woolooga Road. Finally, voters in Cherbourg should cast their ballot at the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council chambers at 22 Barambah Avenue in Cherbourg.
Nanango Healthy Life Expo
- Nanango's inaugural Healthy Life Expo will be held in Pioneer Park, Nanango from 10:00am to 4:00pm today. The Expo will feature an eclectic mix of stalls, workshops, demonstrations and events happening throughout the day, all based around a healthy lifestyle. It will open with a performance by the Shed Music Community, and this will be followed by a speech by Member for Nanango Deb Frecklington. Other highlights on the day will include a Carmen Miranda Fruit Hat Competition, a dog parade, meditation and yoga sessions, and demonstrations in the Pioneer Park skate bowl. At 6:30pm in the evening, Armonica Sound Healing will be playing their Finkenbeiner armonica in the nearby Rapid Fitness Gymnasium. The Armonica is thought by some to have healing properties, and tickets to the concert - which will be on sale in the Expo grounds, and at the door - are $25. 76th Annual Goomeri Show
- The main day of the 76th annual Goomeri Show will get underway at the Goomeri Showgrounds at the corner of Laird Street and the Burnett Highway, Goomeri from around 8:00am this morning and run through until late tonight. This year's Show will be feature a full spread of horse and cattle events including Young Judges and Handlers competitions and showjumping, along with a Stockman's Challenge cowhorse competition which will be held in the evening (the main competition will be held tomorrow). As usual, Goomeri's legendary Dark Rich Fruit Cake Competition will dominate the culinary section of the pavilion competitions, and there'll be good displays of farm produce, flowers and photography too; plus lots of fun family entertainment. The Show will be officially opened at 2:00pm and this will be followed by the Grand Parade at 2:30pm. There'll also be a spectacular fireworks display at around 7:30pm in the evening. Admission to this year's Show is $10 for adults, children aged 13 to under 18 are $5, and under 12s are free. Bowls Club Bingo - Kingaroy
- The Kingaroy Bowls Club at 141 Youngman St, Kingaroy will be running bingo matches from 7:30pm this evening with over $1000 in prizes on offer. More details from the club on (07) 4162-1404
Saturday Soccer - Kingaroy and Wondai
- The second week of 2016's South Burnett Evolution Solar Football League competition will be played at Kingaroy and Wondai today. In Kingaroy, Wests will play Nanango's formidable Panthers at Tom Alford Oval at the end of Oliver Bond Street, with 2nd Division hitting the park at 2:00pm, followed by Women's Division at 3:30pm and 1st Division at 5:00pm. And in Wondai, Barambah will contest Gunners at the Wondai Soccer Fields at the northern end of the Wondai Sportsgrounds on the Bunya Highway, with 2nd Division kicking off at 12:30pm; Women's Division at 2:00pm and 1st Division at 3:15pm. Spectators are very welcome at all games and admission is free. Note: After this week's matches, fans of the Beautiful Game will have to wait until Saturday, April 9 for the next set of matches. No, it's not another FIFA corruption scandal - soccer will be taking an Easter break.
Saturday Rugby League - Wondai
- There will be no A Grade league played in the South Burnett this weekend because local teams will be taking part in the annual “Clash For Cash” competition at Mundubbera. However, there will still be some great games for local fans to enjoy. Today, the South Burnett Eagles Blue U18s will be taking on Pittsworth at the Wondai Sportsgrounds at 2:30pm. A canteen will be operating and spectators are very welcome. And on Sunday, games from Round 3 of the Mal Meninga and the Cyril Connell cups will be played at Stags Oval in Nanango, as well as another Toowoomba U18s clash. At 11:00am, the U16 Central Crows will face the Ipswich Diggers in a Cyril Connell Cup match; at 12:30pm, the U18 Crows and Diggers will go head-to-head in a Mal Meninga Cup game. After this, at 2:00pm, the South Burnett Eagles White will be playing Souths (Toowoomba) in U18s. Again, a canteen will be operating a spectators are very welcome. A-grade league will return to the region next Saturday.
Cricket Grand Finals - Murgon and Kumbia
- The South Burnett's 2016 cricket season will wind up today. In A Grade, the Murgon Crusaders will be playing the Wooroolin Warriors at the Murgon Showgrounds in Macalister Street in a two-day game being played across both Saturday and Sunday. Today's match will start after a morning of junior rugby league, also being played at the Showgrounds. And in B Grade, the mighty Kumbia Rattlers will be playing the indomitable Kingaroy RSL Services in Kumbia. Minor premiers Kumbia defeated Wondai by five wickets, and Kingaroy RSL Services downed Warriors in the semi-finals played last Saturday. Spectators are very welcome at either match.
Nanango RSL Sub-Branch Meeting
- The Nanango RSL Sub-Branch will be holding its monthly meeting at the Nanango RSL in Henry Street, Nanango at 1:00pm this afternoon. All interested people are welcome to attend. More details?
