Today is Good Friday, a public holiday. Most businesses in the South Burnett will either be closed today or operating on restricted hours. While some social clubs and sports groups may be holding their regular Friday events, others will not - so if you're planning to attend something, it's best to phone and check beforehand.

Nanango Readers & Writers Group Meeting

The Nanango Readers & Writers Group will be holding a meeting at the Country Focus building at 41 Drayton Street, Nanango (opposite Nanango Library) at 9:30am this morning. The NRWG is an informal discussion group for anyone interested in reading and/or writing any form of literature or drama, and it meets on the first and third Fridays of each month. 2014 ASRA Nationals - Wondai

The first day of the 4-day ASRA Nationals for gyrocopter fliers will be held at Wondai Airport on the Wondai-Proston Road north of Wondai from 7:15am onwards this morning, when activities kick off with a breakfast. The rest of the mortning will be given over to checking in the 80-plus fliers expected to take part in the competition as well as general flying, before a lunch beak at noon. There'll be an ASRA workshop running from 1:00pm to 4:00pm which will focus on identifying witness marks and their cause for pilots conducting pre-flight checks (to which everyone is welcome), then a free BBQ dinner at 6:30pm before the day wraps up with an ASRA Board meeting at 7:45pm. The main competition will occur on Saturday and Sunday, and members of the public are very welcome to drop into the airport to see the many different gyrocopters taking part, ask questions and find out more about the sport. Friday Night Social Bowls - Murgon

The Murgon Bowls Club in Macalister Street, Murgon will be holding Friday Night Social Bowls from 6:00pm onwards this evening (bar opens at 4:00m; games start at 6:30pm). The $15 green fee includes all games and a great BBQ dinner, and it's open to bowlers and non-bowlers alike - just wear soft-soled shoes or go barefoot. Friday Night Darts - Kingaroy

The South Burnett Darts Association will be holding their regular weekly Social Competition Night from 7:00pm to 10:00pm at their premises at Shed 1, 18 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. This is a 3-a-side event with a $5 playing fee, and a fully licensed bar will be operating along with raffles. New players are always very welcome, and the club caters for all skill levels from novice to expert. Swimming For Fitness - Nanango

The South Burnett Regional Council's new Swimming For Fitness program (for adults) will be held between 9:00am and 10:00am this morning at the South Burnett Aquatic Centre in Henry Street, Nanango. This program is run by a local swimming coach and is open to adults of all fitness and ability levels. It aims to teach new ways to become physically active and how to stay active for life. Greet, Meet & Eat - Yarraman

CANCELLED: A "Greet, Meet & Eat" social function will be held at St Phillips Anglican Church Hall in Millar Street, Yarraman from 10:00am until around 1:00pm today. The group was formed in May 2012 to provide a safe place where locals from Yaraman, Blackbutt and Cooyar could get together, enjoy each other's company and meet others in a low-cost way, and it's met on the third Friday of each month ever since (except for December and January). Today's meeting will kick off at 10:00am with a cuppa and will be followed by a three-course lunch at 12:00 noon. South Burnett Pantry - Kingaroy

The South Burnett Pantry will be open from 11:00am to 1:00pm today at 22 Stolzenberg Road in Kingaroy. The Pantry is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Management and staffed by volunteers, and it helps low income families, couples and singles stretch their shopping dollar further. The Pantry offers $35 pantry hampers that contain most of the food and personal cleaning items that most people need to get through part of the week (though you'll need to shop elsewhere for extras or special items).
