94th Annual Burrandowan Picnic Races
The 94th annual Burrandowan Picnic Races - a South Burnett tradition since 1922 and one of Queensland's most famous picnic race meetings - will be held at the Burrandowan Race Track 66km southwest of Kingaroy from early this morning (when clay target shooting blasts into action) until very late tonight (when the last exhausted race-goer drops off to sleep). This first race in this year's five-race program will leave the barriers at 1:00pm and there'll also be a Fashions of the Field competition with more than $4000 in prizes; a fully licensed bar operating from around 11:00am; good country food available all day from the race club's canteen; and the traditional Burrandowan pit-fired barbecues and sizzling steaks at night. There's also a great afternoon High Tea running in the race club's hall, and gourmet picnic hampers available for pick-up, but you need to book either (or both) of these in advance from the race club's website. This year attendees can dance the night away under the stars with entertainers Kerry Kennedy and Double Barrel or take advantage of shuttle buses that will be running from Kingaroy to Burrandowan and back again for the benefit of those who'd rather party hard than drive (you can get full details about these on the Burrandowan Picnic Races website too). Accommodation packages and free overnight camping at the track are available as well. Entry to this year's Races is $25 per head for adults but under-18s are free. More information? Phone Burrandowan Races secretary Carolyn Stone on (07) 4164-8147 or email her. You can also get more information on the Burrandowan Picnic Races website
82nd Annual Blackbutt Show
The 82nd annual Blackbutt Show will be held at the Blackbutt Showgrounds in Hart Street, Blackbutt from 5:00am this morning (when the gates open) until late tonight. This year's Show will feature a full range of horse events (anything from led breed and ridden breed through to hacks and rider classes). There'll also be a big roll-up of stud cattle and poultry; the popular woodchop and chainsawing competitions; lots of ring events; a Dog Show; a miniature goat section; and plenty of fun for children including face painting, a baby animal farm and a puppet show. As usual the Show will also feature a great spread of pavilion exhibits; sideshow alley; showbags; and trade displays. After dark there'll also be D Max Ute Show in the main arena and a great Fireworks display, followed by live entertainment from popular entertainers Lodi from 8:00pm until midnight. The Show's official opening will occur at 1:15pm. Admission this year is still just $12.00 for adults or $5.00 for high school students and pensioners (children under 12 are admitted free). More details? Contact the Show Society on (07) 4163-0999 or 0447-970-999. PS: You can read more about what last year's Blackbutt Show was like - and see photos - on our website.

President's Cup Soccer - Kingaroy
Football South Burnett will be staging their annual President's Cup competition at Tom Alford Oval at the end of Oliver Bond Street in Kingaroy today. In 2nd Division, arch rivals the Nanango Panthers and Kingaroy's Wests will battle it out at 2:00pm, and this will be followed by the Women's Division match between Barambah and the Panthers at 4:00pm. Finally, in 1st Division, Panthers will play Gunners at 6:00pm. A bar and canteen will be running and spectators and supporters are very welcome! Memories Of The Energy Trail - Yarraman
The Yarraman Heritage Museum located in the grounds of Heritage House at 26 Millar Street in Yarraman will be hosting "Memories Of The Energy Trail" from 9:00am to around 2:00pm today. This free event will highlight the now-extinct Yarraman Powerhouse and talk about the pioneers of electricity in Yarraman, the Budgen family, as well as the current providers, Stanwell Corporation. Although it seems incredible now, Nanango didn't have electricity until 1933 and it didn't come to Yarraman until 1939, and Blackbutt until 1954. Today's get-together will also look back at the personal memories of what it was like to live without electricity, and the impacts this had on everyday life for families and farmers. Everyone is welcome! More details? Phone Heritage House on (07) 4163-8111.
Yarraman Markets
The Yarraman Progress Association's Yarraman Markets will be held on the vacant block at the corner of the D'Aguilar and New England Highways in Yarraman from 7:00am until around 12:00 noon today (ie opposite Bendigo Bank). The markets feature trash and treasure stalls, car boot sellers, local produce and hand-made goods, as well as food stalls, and are held on the second Saturday of every month. Everyone is welcome and if you'd like to book a stall yourself - it's only $5! - call Joe on (0459) 638-282
