The National Farmers’ Federation is calling for a National Food Security Preparedness Strategy to address global trends affecting food security.
President David Jochinke said the impending election was occurring at a critical moment for Australian agriculture.
“The NFF’s election platform is the call for a comprehensive framework to safeguard our ability to feed and clothe Australians amid growing disruptions,” Mr Jochinke said.
These disruptions included:
- Skyrocketing production costs and red tape pressuring food prices and farming bottom lines
- A protectionist and uncertain global trading environment
- A changing climate and associated regulations
- The energy transition – placing pressure on prices and land
- Internal migration to the regions – stretching housing, infrastructure and services
- Unmet workforce needs – placing a handbrake on productivity
“We’re lucky to have a strong food system, but we’re not bulletproof. As the world becomes more volatile we need to respond in a co-ordinated way,” Mr Jochinke said.
“One in three Australian families now face moderate to severe food insecurity – a challenge that will only deepen without decisive action.
“A National Food Strategy would help us understand the vulnerabilities in our supply chains, and take action to ensure a food secure future for Australian families.”
