Christmas will be a little bit brighter for families in Cherbourg this year, thanks to the generosity of the local Council.
Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council distributed 350 hams – plus torches and lanterns – to households across the community on Thursday morning.
Deputy Mayor Carla Fisher said the idea to distribute a ham to every household in Cherbourg was put in place by the previous Council, but the current Council had decided to continue spreading the festive cheer.
“Christmas time for families can be very hard,” she said.
“It is a way for Council to help the people.”
CEO Chatur Zala said it was “all about caring at Christmas”.
As well as a ham, each household also received a torch and lantern, part of Cherbourg’s “Get Ready” campaign for disaster preparedness.
Cr Gordon Wragge said Cherbourg had been badly affected by the 2011 and 2013 floods but Council was now better prepared for any future disaster.
CEO Zala said a flood camera system had been installed, plus a community siren and rain gauges, and the town’s sports centre was ready for any major disaster.
A team of Cherbourg works department employees delivered the hams, bought from Swickers, to houses in every street in Cherbourg.
