The owners of 80 nature refuges across Queensland – including several in the South Burnett – will share in almost $1.1 million in the latest round of the State Government’s Nature Refuge Landholder Grants Program.

Nature refuges are privately-owned protected areas which protect a diversity of ecosystems and threatened species.

The Nature Refuge Landholder Grants Program supports landholders who are actively working to conserve and manage their properties.

Successful applicants in the South Burnett include:

  • Fiona’s Nature Refuge at Boondooma – $13,000. This project will provide futureproofing of water supply by building two new dams, construct and rebuild firebreaks and access tracks including constructing an access track to the river.
  • Redgens Nature Refuge at Wooroolin – $4730. The funds will be used to purchase signs displaying local indigenous history, culture and songlines. The project will also include weed control activities controlling lantana and grasses around the nature refuge boundaries.
  • Resolute Nature Refuge at Nanango – $3600. This project is to undertake road and firebreak maintenance works on the property.

More than $3.5 million in grant funding has been allocated to a total of 416 projects since the the release of the State Government’s Protected Area Strategy in October 2020.

“Nature refuge owners deserve every bit of praise for their love for the environment, and this funding is critical to helping them look after the local ecosystems and animals they’ve chosen to protect,” Environment Minister Leanne Linard said.
