A crowd of about 200 people came to Nanango’s Showgrounds on Sunday morning to take part in the town’s traditional Australia Day celebrations.

Earlybirds enjoyed a free breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs, baked beans, toast, tea and coffee served up by members of the Nanango Tourism and Development Association (NaTDA).

Brekkie was accompanied by bush poetry from Bruce Webb, Wendy Mathews and Bill Andress, and live music from the Screaming Banshees.

At 9:00am, the official part of the day kicked off with a flag-raising ceremony, and the National Anthem performed by James Webb.

After this, compere Cr Roz Frohloff introduced Nanango’s South Burnett Australia Day award winners and nominees to the audience.

This was followed by the now-traditional dog high jumps and tug-o-war on the main oval, and an Aussie singalong in the showgrounds’ main pavilion, accompanied by free watermelon, damper and treacle and ice blocks until proceedings broke up around noon.

This year’s festivities were jointly sponsored by NaTDA, the Nanango Show Society and South Burnett Regional Council.

NaTDA president Gloria Kirkness said she was very pleased with the day’s turnout and thanked the many volunteers who helped make it possible.

“A lot of people put in a really big effort to make sure everything ran smoothly,” she said.

“We’re very grateful for their support.”
