Heavier export cattle saw a price rise at the latest fortnightly sale in Murgon on Tuesday, but the market for yearling and weaner heifers remains tough

700 cattle were yarded in Murgon on Tuesday, July 17, and heavier export cattle were dearer, with increases of up to 10–15 cents in places.

Better feeder types also sold to improved values, but the market for yearling and weaner heifers is still tough.

Cattle were drawn from Mundubbera, Gayndah, Kingaroy, Kilkivan, Goomeri, Durong and the Murgon district.

Sale results:

  • Heavy bulls sold to $2.68/kg and $2550
  • Heavy steers topped at $2.79/kg and $1750
  • Export heifers sold to $1550 and $2.55/kg
  • Cows over 500kg sold to $2.45/kg and $1655, averaging $2.27/kg
  • Cows 400–500kg topped at $2.28/kg for a $2.14/kg average
  • Lighter cows under 400kg averaged $1.76/kg, selling to $2.01/kg
  • 463kg Charolais steers from the Hoogstraten family of Goomeri sold for $2.74/kg, returning $1270
  • 430kg Limousin steers from G & V Wicks of Tingoora sold for $1164 at $2.71/kg
  • Santa steers from G & N Schneider of Gayndah sold to $2.70/kg and $1200
  • 385kg Charolais cross steers from Moffatdale sold to $2.60/kg, returning $1000
  • Very few weaner steers were yarded, the tops selling to $2.75/kg and $780.00
  • 449kg Charolais heifers from Goomeri sold for $1100 at $2.45/kg
  • 360kg Charolais cross heifers from P & G Bennett of Manumbar sold for $918 at $2.55/kg
  • 283kg Charbray heifers from Myora Pastoral of Johnstown sold for $2.39/kg, returning $680
  • 2 pens of Angus weaner heifers from Kruger Farming of Durong sold for $759 ($2.58) and $700 ($2.55)
