Wrongly biased balls can catch out even the most experienced players … Kingaroy Bowls Club members Briggitte Kung and Maree Milard show how it should be done

I am sure that there won’t be too much activity on the South Burnett’s bowling greens this weekend, except for the odd bit of sweeping and mopping up.

As I write this, the cyclone watch currently extends in a line through Gayndah to Murgon, then south and beyond.

We can only hope that all our bowls clubs gain nothing from Cyclone Marcia but beneficial rain.

Anyway, Kingaroy leads this week’s bulletin.

Kingaroy News

“The little rings are on the inside and the big rings are on the outside.”

“I knew that!” you might say.

“Then how come you occasionally bowl one down with the wrong bias?”

In some clubs bowling with the wrong bias might be cause for a shout for bar, but in Kingaroy it will cost you one dollar.

The money goes into the “once-upon-a-time swear box”.

And it is all in a good cause.

The thought of rolling a wrong biased bowl during a game is something most bowlers don’t want to think about, as it tends to lead to good-natured ridicule from team mates and opponents alike.

So Kingaroy Bowls club members devised a system of “fines” for those bowlers who are unfortunate to roll a “wrong bias”.

The system started in 2014 and each wrong bias now costs $1.

On February 9, the wrong bias tin was emptied and its $200 contents were donated to the RACQ Care Flight Helicopter Rescue Service.

The helicopter is regularly seen from the bowls club as it makes its way to and from the Kingaroy Hospital and a number of members have had cause to use this essential service.

Yarraman News

Not a lot of activity in Yarraman this week due to the weather and players away.

But last Saturday, Yarraman played away at Nanango in the latest instalment of their rotational triples clash.

The Ladies Club had a social morning and their 94 year old stalwart Eileen Elliott joined them for lunch.

In the social competition, the winners were Neil and Sandra Currell who defeated Brian Dugdell and Margaret Willoughby 30-6.

Runners-up were Ivy Wrembeck, Alison Anderson and Jenny Moore who downed Robyn Diercke, Di Currell and Kay Dugdell 22-15.

And in the other game of the day, John Moore and Wayne Emms defeated Lorri Holmes and Eunice Smith 13-11.
