Heatwave conditions on several days this week created some real problems for greenkeepers and Games Directors.

One very conscientious greenkeeper was spotted on the green with his watering system at 4:00am one morning, and Games Directors had problems with lack of numbers on some days, too.

And with this weekend forecast to be even more blistering, these problems may continue for awhile yet.

Anyway, Kingaroy heads the bulletin this week: they held their annual November Carnival last weekend, with Pairs being played on Friday, November 7 and Fours being played on Saturday and Sunday, November 8-9.

20 teams took part in the Pairs and 22 teams participated in the Fours.

Teams came from all over south-east Queensland including the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Bundaberg and Toowoomba.

The weather was warm and only slightly tempered by an intermittent breeze.

On Friday, each of the teams played 3 games of 18 ends with the amount of wins and ends determining the overall winners.

The competition was keen with the overall winners having to be separated by the overall winning margins:

  • Winners: Toowoomba (Jim Williams and Nathan Appleton) – 3 wins, 33 1/2 ends, margin 43
  • Runners up: Bundaberg (John Jardine and Ian McCracken) – 3 wins, 33 1/2 ends, margin 37
  • Third: Crows Nest (Terry Gilles and Tony Collins) – 3 wins, 33 ends

The Fours comprised of 5 games of 18 ends over the two days. Once again, wins and ends determined the overall winners.

The competition was close with a number of teams being in a position to win deep into the second day.

Eventually only one team went through the weekend with five wins, while two teams had four wins and
one draw. The next four teams had four wins and a loss.

  • Winners: Toowoomba (Norm Head, Geoff Gill, Gary Gray, Graeme Kath) – 5 wins, 55 1/2 ends
  • Runners up: Bundaberg (Brian Beynon, John Jardine, Frank Riggio, Ian McCracken) – 4 wins, 1 draw, 53 ends
  • Third: Kandanga (Greg Maher, Garry Dan, Tony Green, Jack Horne) – 4 wins, 1 draw, 49 ends
