Bowls at Kingaroy can always attract a gallery, and last Saturday’s Ladies Consistency Competition was no exception.

This is a knockout competition is designed to ensure the most consistent players are triumphant.

Each bowler has four bowls and the object of the competition is to get the most bowls closest to the jack, which keeps the gallery excited until the end of the match.

The four closest bowls have a points value.

The closest earns four points, the second scores three, the third two, and the fourth gets one point.

This scoring regime means it is possible for one player to score a maximum of 10 points on any one end.

The game is played until one player achieves a score of 121 points or better.

But there are some hazards to the competition too.

Five points are deducted for moving the kitty more than one metre from its original position and there are also deductions for a kitty that is rolled out of bounds.

It’s probably easier to pick the winner of the Melbourne Cup when the horses are coming close to the post!

Results for the leading rinks were:

  • Beryl Woods def. Val Jeppesen 122-108
  • Charmaine MacLeod def. Wanda Carland 121-94
  • Wendy Turner def. Gladys Slatter 122-118

Last weekend a group of 56 bowlers from the Northern Gold Coast’s Dolphins Social Club (based at the Paradise Point Bowls Club) visited the South Burnett and played bowls at Nanango Bowls Club on Saturday and at Kingaroy on Sunday.

The day at Kingaroy was a game of fours over 21 ends.

Rather than have a Kingaroy v Dolphins match, the teams were mixed so that players from both clubs played with and against their team mates.

The Gold Coast players were enjoying their turn on the greens and were appreciating the breeze that was keeping the temperatures to a pleasant level.

The rivalry was keen, particularly between players from each club that were playing against one another.

The scores at the end of the day were insignificant as everyone had a good day and the fun that was had by all far outweighed the results.

Dolphins Skip, Ken Shaw, did however indicate that some bragging rights from Dolphin players in the winning teams would be taken back to the Coast

On Thursday, thirty members took part in the usual monthly Trophy Day triples. And with club sponsored trophies up for grabs, the competition was keen.

The winning conditions of play were kept secret until after the day’s play, when it was revealed the winners would be the team with the closest winning margin.

  • Winners: Fred Keding, Kay Muller and Kev Raffin – Winning margin 1.
  • Runners Up: Dave Barwick, Barry O’Brien and John Coppard – Margin 10

Results:

  • Fred Keding, Kay Muller and Kev Raffin def. Des Richards, Eric Ford and Hugh Harrison 22-21

Yarraman news

A couple of great stories from Yarraman this week:

First off, the Yarraman Ladies celebrated their 50 years centenary with a President’s At Home Day and the final of the Men’s Pairs Championships, which turned out to be a thriller.

Ladies President Helene Johnson skipped a team which comprised some of their executives.

The Men’s Pairs was a real bottler, though, with Brian Profke and Merv Fitch playing club president Brian Dugdell and his long-time bowling partner George Wolksi.

The bookmakers were rubbing their hands after seven ends: Profke and Fitch had not scored, while Dugdell and Wolksi were up 15 to nil.

But after a mid-rink chat, the wily Merv Fitch had stirred his partner up.

They bounced into it, and after sixteen ends the scores were level at 17-all.

It was do or die from there.

With one end to go, Profke and Fitch were up 23-18 but Team Dugdell scored a five to even at 23-23.

A deciding end was played, and Profke/Fitch scored a single to snatch the title.

The Lady President’s At Home Day was part of the Yarraman Ladies Fifty Years’ celebrations.

It was a very social affair with winners drawn from the cards.

The honour of cutting the celebration cake went to Lady Veteran Eileen Elliott.

The match which drew gallery attention was the Yarraman President’s team versus the Burnett District Ladies’ four.- quite a nail biter!

In the end, Helene Johnson, Alison Anderson, Lola Harper and Margaret Willoughby defeated Fay Simpson, Dell Lane, Hazel Sippel and Pat Darlington 20-16.
