Mayor Wayne Kratzmann and Agriculture Minister John McVeigh in Kingaroy today

January 31, 2013

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s visit to the South Burnett by Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney and Local Government Minister David Crisafulli, another State Government Minister dropped into Kingaroy today to check out the region’s flood woes.

Agriculture Minister John McVeigh met with members of the South Burnett Disaster Management Group.

Mr McVeigh visited the South Burnett to check out damage to local farms on his way to Bundaberg.

Earlier in the day, South Burnett Mayor Wayne Kratzmann and council staff toured northern parts of the region to prepare an overview of the damage ahead of Mr McVeigh’s visit.

The team visited the badly hit areas of Byee and Silverleaf, as well as Wondai, Ficks Crossing, Hivesville, Mondure, Proston, Boondooma Dam and Murgon.

Near Proston, they stopped by the Smithfield Feedlot.

Council workers have been toiling over the past few days to reopen the nearby Proston-Boondooma Road to allow access for fodder trucks.

There were reportedly 18,400 head of cattle in the feedlot and no access because of a washout.

Mayor Kratzmann told southburnett.com.au the road was now open and the cattle were “happy”.
