Queen's Birthday Public Holiday
Today is the Queen's Birthday Public Holiday. This holiday had its origins in the 19th century when Queen Victoria decreed that the second Saturday in June should be regarded as the official celebration of the soverign's birthday, regardless of whoever held the throne and whenever their actual birthday occurred. This observance soon spread through all the nations of what was then the British Empire and the custom was followed by Victoria's successors Edward VII, George V and Elizabeth II. In England, the Queen's Birthday Holiday is marked by the annual Trooping Of The Colours ceremony on Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall, the official residence of the royal family in the 16th and 17th centuries. In the South Burnett, it's marked by most businesses either closing their doors and taking the day off or by others operating on restricted hours. This will be the last public holiday until the South Burnett's annual RNA Show Holiday on Monday 12th August 2013.
