Kumbia Race Club Mid-Year Meeting
The Kumbia Racing Club will be holding their brand new Mid-Year Meeting at the Kumbia racetrack from around 11:00am this morning through until 5:00pm this afternoon (the first race leaves the barriers at 1:05pm). This brand new 5-card event was given to the club by Premier Campbell Newman at last year's Melbourne Cup Day race meeting and is a very welcome addition to the South Burnett's annual racing calendar. As usual, the Kumbia trackside will be dotted with tents and picnicers enjoying the relaxed country racing atmosphere, and the meeting will have a licensed bar, BBQ, and the Luncheon Hall in operation, along with full Sky-TV race meeting coverage and a vigorous betting ring. Admission is just $10 for adults and $5 for concessions, and everyone is welcome (you can dress up for race day too, if you like - it's a bit of a Kumbia tradition!). More details? Contact the Kumbia Race Club Secretary on (07) 4163-7200.
Nanango Country Markets
The Nanango Show Society will be holding their regular monthly Country Markets at the Nanango Showgrounds in Cairns Street from 6:00am to around 12:00 noon today. As usual, the markets will feature a wide variety of craft stalls, new and used goods, plants, poultry and pets. The Nanango Markets are the largest rural market in south east Queensland and routinely attract 320 to 420 stallholders. But new stallholders are always very welcome too! More info? Phone the Market Co-Ordinator on (0427) 631-273 during business hours.
Rural Fire Service Day
Today is Rural Fire Service Day in Queensland, an opportunity to celebrate the dedication and commitment of the 34,000 men and women who volunteer in local brigades to help keep Queensland safe. A number of the South Burnett's rural fire brigades are having open days or displays to celebrate, and the public are very welcome to come along to any of them to meet the firies, thank them for the wondefful work they do in our region and even sign aboard themseves if they want: South Nanango - at the Nanango markets; Cloyna - 4:00pm-7:00pm at the fire shed, 42 West Road, Cloyna; McEuen - at the fire shed, 474 Cushnie Road, Wondai; Ballogie, Coverty, Durong and Glencoe - a combvined display by all four brigades from 8:00am to 2:00pm at the Ballogie fire shed on the Chinchilla-Wondai Road; Widgee - at the Widgee markets at the Widgee General Store, Gympie-Woolooga Road
Dance - Inverlaw Hall
A dance will be held at Inverlaw Hall on the Burrandowan Road (roughly 20km from Kingaroy) from 8:00pm until late this evening. Music will be supplied by The Sempf Family and there'll be the usual great supper and novelties, along with a big Lucky Door draw. Admission fees are $12.00 for adults, $4.00 for high school students and everyone is welcome! More details? Phone David on (0459) 228-882.
Art Exhibition Opening - Wondai
The Wondai Regional Art Gallery on the roundabout at Wondai will be hosting a special two day exhibition by South Burnett artist Lee Porter from 10:00am to 4:00pm today and tomorrow. The exhibition is "Can You See What I See?" and it features paintings of animals which convey human-like expressions and/or emotions in their eyes. The exhibition will be travelling to Florence, Italy in July at the invitation of Gallery360, and this weekend's showing is to allow South Burnett residents to see it before the Italians do (since it will be representing our region in one of the world's art capitals). Admission to view it is free. An official opening will also be held at the Gallery at 6:00pm this evening, and everyone is welcome along. More details? Phone the Gallery on (07) 4168-5926. You can also read more about the exhibition on this page of our website.
Lloyd Back - Kingaroy
Popular South Burnett entertainer Lloyd Back will be performing at the Kingaroy RSL in Markwell Street, Kingaroy from 7:30pm to 11:30pm this evening. Admission is free. More details? Phone the RSL on (07) 4162-1755
Saturday Soccer - Nanango and Kingaroy
The eighth round of the 2013 Evolution Solar South Burnett Football League will be held in Nanango and Kingaroy today. In Nanango, the blisteringly good home team will take on the up-and-coming Gunners at the Nanango Sportsgrounds in what promise to be the matches of the day, with Nanango seeking to defend their top-of-the-table position and Gunners equally keen to pull margin off them. 2nd Division will face off at 12:30pm; Womens Division at 2:00pm; and 1st Division at 3:15pm. Meanwhile in Kingaroy, Wests will play Barambah at Tom Alford Oval in Oliver Bond Street, with 2nd Division toeing the line at 2:00pm, Women's Division at 3:15pm and 1st Division at 5:00pm. Meanwhile, junior games will be held at the Wondai Sportsgrounds today. Spectators and supporters are very welcome to all matches, and canteens will be operating at all venues too.
Saturday Rugby League - Nanango
The seventh round of the 2013 South Burnett Premier League competition will be held at Fred Kassulke Oval off the D'Aguilar Highway south of Nanango's CBD today - and it'll be an A-Grade Double Header. In the first match of the day at 1:00pm, the Nanango Stags will take on the formidable Cherbourg Hornets (currently at number 1 on the ladder); and they'll be followed in the second match by the mighty Wondai Wolves taking on the hard-working Blackbutt Timbertowners. Spectators and supporters are very welcome! PS: This week the juniors will be off at Mundubbera playing in the President's Cup. The U12 match is Kingaroy v Cherbourg; the U14 is Murgon v Central Burnett; and the U16 is Central Burnett v Cherbourg.
Saturday Afternoon AFL - Kingaroy
The South Burnett Saints AFL team will be playing their fourth home game of the season when they come up against Stingers/Tigers at Lyle Vidler Oval in Kingaroy at 2:30pm this afternoon. The Saints currently sit near the bottom of the table with 4 points (along with Highfields and Chinchilla, but ahead of Lockyer Valley). So they'll be keen to improve their position today in front of a home crowd, and it should be an interesting match to watch. Spectators and supporters are very welcome!

A dance (and dance lessons, if you need them) will be held at Tablelands Hall from 6:30pm until late tonight (supper is served at 6:30pm; dancing will follow afterwards). The dance will feature old time and new vogue numbers and admission includes the supper. Entry is $10 for adults, $5 for high school students and $2.50 for anyone else. Everyone is welcome!
