An Indigenous-owned building company, Arafura Building Systems, recently moved its factory from the Sunshine Coast to Cherbourg.

Arafura Building Systems aims to make affordable housing while at the same time creating economic and employment opportunities.

Last December, Arafura officially moved its factory from Kunda Park to Cherbourg’s old abattoir site.

In January, it began recruiting and training Cherbourg residents in the manufacturing of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) which are used to build AussieBuild 3000 granny flats and new homes.

“Arafura’s partnership with the Cherbourg Community Council is a pioneering step in demonstrating how collaboration, innovation, and respect for local knowledge can drive meaningful change,”  Arafura CEO Warren Bretag said.

“We’re proud to support the Cherbourg community in building a stronger future, one home at a time.”

Cherbourg’s long-standing joinery can work with Arafura to fit out the accommodation units.

  1. Is it true that residents of Cherbourg can never purchase their own home? If so, what a great opportunity now for them to buy a home to leave a legacy to their family.
