Anzac Day will be extra special for students from several South Burnett schools who have been working hard in the lead up to the 110th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, thanks to a postcard project promoted by RSL Queensland.
Murgon RSL Sub-Branch has been involved with the “Postcards Of Honour” project since it began three years ago.
Sub-Branch president Grahame Blackwell OAM said the group had been working with students from Murgon State High School, Murgon State School, St Joseph’s Catholic School and four other cluster schools.
Cards from RSL Queensland were distributed to the students.
“They research somebody so they can understand what Anzac Day is all about rather than just attending a commemoration because the school tells them to,” Mr Blackwell said.
“They select someone. It could be a member of their family or someone whose name is on the Memorial, and they research them, write a short story about them and draw pictures on the cards. After they are finished, we go along and talk to them about it.”
RSL Queensland estimates that 24,000 students from 228 schools across Queensland will be taking part in the “Postcards Of Honour” project this year, expressing their gratitude, knowledge or personal connection to the defence force and veterans’ community.
