Blackbutt North resident Sharon Berderow has launched an online petition in a bid to stop a 5G mobile phone tower being built at 280 Bowman Road.
The change.org petition had attracted 180 signatures by November 2.
It demands the South Burnett Regional Council take action to stop the installation of the tower.
“Together, we can ensure that community interests are prioritised and that we explore safer, more appropriate locations for essential infrastructure. Join us in safeguarding the health, environment, and property value of our beloved South Burnett community,” the petition reads,
Ms Berderow said she had concerns for the health and safety of her family as well as the entire neighbourhood.
“There are significant health concerns associated with the placement of 5G towers in close proximity to residential areas,” the petition alleges.
“Although scientific consensus on the safety of 5G technology is evolving, lingering uncertainties remain regarding long-term exposure to electromagnetic fields. Such concerns are exacerbated when these towers are installed at such close distances to our homes, like the proposed 80 meters from our residence.
“Moreover, our community values its environment, known for its serene landscape and the thriving local flora and fauna. Many fear that the installation of a 5G tower could disrupt our natural habitat, potentially impacting local wildlife adversely.
“Another crucial aspect is the potential devaluation of property in the vicinity of the proposed 5G tower. This installation risks degrading the appeal of our neighborhood, making it less attractive to potential property buyers who may be wary of living close to telecommunications infrastructure.
“We appreciate the advancements that come with telecommunications technology, yet we strongly believe that these should not come at the cost of our community’s well-being. Instead of placing the tower near our homes, we urge our local South Burnett Regional Council to consider alternative locations that would minimise these adverse impacts.”
Public submissions on the proposal closed on October 26.
In 2023, the South Burnett Regional Council refused to approve the erection of a 5G tower in Redmans Road, Coolabunia, which was immediately appealed by the proponents.
After a number of preliminary hearings, the Planning and Environment Court approved the development application with some minor changes, with the SBRC refusing to release publicly the cost of the failed court proceedings.
