Telstra has announced it will be delaying its closure of the 3G network by two months,  from June 30 to August 31.

A spokesperson said the delay was to give people more time to upgrade their devices.

The closure of the nation’s 3G network is an industry-wide change however anyone using devices that rely on 3G for either data, voice or emergency calls will need to make a change to stay connected when it switches off.

Mobile customers who are directly using the Telstra network – or a provider that uses the Telstra network – can check if their handset will be affected by using an SMS tool provided by Telstra.

To check if your handset will be affected,  text the number “3” to 3498.

In April, Federal MP Llew O’Brien expressed concerns that people who rely on 3G medical devices and businesses with equipment that requires 3G service may not be ready for the June shutdown.
