A Telstra spokesperson has warned there will be some temporary outages – or reductions in mobile coverage – while it upgrades its mobile network in Kingaroy next week.

The spokesperson said the upgrades would temporarily affect Telstra mobile coverage between September 4-10.

“Telstra mobile customers have been sent text messages advising them of the upcoming work,” the spokesperson said.

“Landline services, NBN internet services and mobile coverage from other providers will not be impacted.

“Any calls to Triple Zero from a Telstra mobile when the site is off air will automatically be diverted to any working mobile network for connection to emergency services.”

Telstra Regional General Manager May Boisen said crews needed to work during daylight for safety.

“We’ll only be switching off the site when we need to and have it back on as quickly as possible,” Ms Boisen said.

“We are working to deliver improved coverage and capacity to the region, as our customers’ data use continues to grow.

“While mobile coverage will decline during the works, we’ll work to keep the amount of time the site is off air to an absolute minimum.

“There’s never a good time to undertake this sort of work but once it is completed, it will mean better mobile services for local residents.”

Nanango residents have been vocal on social media recently after upgrades to the Telstra network there disrupted services for several days.

The upgrades are believed to be linked to the closure next year of the 3G network.

Telstra’s tips for improving connectivity while works are under way:

For mobile coverage in the interim, if residents have access to a wi-fi signal at home or at work, Telstra encourages residents to activate wi-fi calling.

This is a free setting on most popular mobile phones and allows mobiles to use a wi-fi network to make and receive mobile calls.

To find out more, Google “Telstra wifi calling” or just search in the phone’s settings.

Telstra understands many businesses use its network for their EFTPOS terminals.

However, Telstra does not operate the EFTPOS network; it is operated by financial institutions.

Many EFTPOS terminals can also be connected using fixed line or wi-fi/nbn internet connections.

Retailers should contact their bank for more information and details on how to switch between these methods to ensure continuous service.

FOOTNOTE: The message from Telstra received on southburnett.com.au’s mobile phones indicated the upgrades would occur over 10 days, starting August 31.

  1. Telstra Home Internet is today actively dropping out this afternoon 7/9/23.

Has been consistently steady for a long time now so this is out of the blue. Could this be associated with the ongoing maintenance?

  2. Imagine if this “outage” was a bank or a healthcare provider upgrading its software, and they didn’t have the decency to keep a backup system live while the upgrade occurred?

Well that’s simply the arrogant behemoth that is Telstra. Switch off the customer when we like, where we like, for as long as we like.

For heavens sake, it’s 2023. Is Telstra’s systems really THAT tightly coupled that everything has to be switched off?
