Queensland consumers have been urged to check where the milk they are buying actually comes from.
“We want people to buy milk which is processed in Queensland using mostly local dairy farmers milk from Queensland and northern NSW,” eastAUSmilk CEO Eric Danzi said on Friday.
(EastAUSmilk is the industry body which represents Queensland dairy farmers.)
“The Queensland dairy industry has been turned on it’s head over the past few months,” Mr Danzi said.
“The closure in July of the South Brisbane milk factory owned by Lactalis has caused major chaos in the lives of many farmers and factory workers in Queensland.
“The closure has seen milk processing move to other States, taking a lot of Queensland jobs away.
“Also, it has seen some dairy farmers in Queensland stranded without anyone willing to buy their milk.
“It seems extraordinary that in a State where over half the milk consumed in Queensland comes from interstate, that local farmers have no one to sell their milk to.”
Mr Danzi said some retailers and processors had little interest about where their milk comes from or supporting Queensland jobs.
“Most Woolworths milk now is not produced or processed in Queensland,” Mr Danzi said.
“Around half is processed in other States which completely undermines the local dairy industry and takes jobs away both on farm and in factories. Most of the other half is processed in Queensland but has very little Queensland milk in it.”
