A date has been set for the official opening of Murgon’s “Ancient Songbird Centre” in Macalister Street.

The building – which will feature a fossil museum, art gallery, garden, gift shop and a workshop area – will be opened at 11:00am on Saturday, May 20.

The centre is a project of the Creative Country Association, which has been successful in getting Federal Government grants to help make the project a reality.

Committee members had a display promoting the centre at Saturday’s Murgon Show.

Murgon Business and Development Association president Leo Geraghty said Member for Wide Bay Llew O’Brien had been invited to do the opening honours.

The internal fitout of the building is proceeding, with work on the central Prehistoric Garden almost finished.

Leo said this area, which features a life-size model of a Pleistocene-era Diprotodon, would be the perfect place for visitors to relax in the shade and enjoy a coffee.

One Response to "Songbird Centre To Open In May"

  1. This Ancient Songbird Centre has been a credit to all involved in making it come to fruition. The Creative Country Association has not only created a fabulous tourist attraction but also an educational and interesting place for the locals to visit. I did suggest to Leo that one of the animals be called “Leo” – would be so much easier than trying to pronounce names such as Pleistocene-era Diprotodon!
