Former Kingaroy boxer Liam Wilson will be in the fight of his life on Saturday when he takes on Mexican Emanuel Navarrete for the WBO super featherweight title.

It’s believed this is the first time a Kingaroy boxer has fought for a world title.

Wilson, 26, trained as a junior in Kingaroy under local legend Len Hams.

He had 13 fights under Hams before moving to Caboolture.

In 2017, Wilson qualified for the Commonwealth Games in the light welterweight category.

Going into the Games, Wilson was a five-times Australian champion, nine-times Queensland champion and six-times Australian Golden Glove winner with 122 wins from 135 fights.

Wilson easily won his first fight at the games, defeating PNG boxer John Ume 5-0 in the Men’s 64kg bout but was defeated 5-0 by Englishman Luke McCormack in a quarter-final bout.

In his professional career, Wilson has a record of 11 wins (six by KO or TKO) with just one loss.

In March last year, Wilson knocked out Filipino Joe Noynay to secure the WBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title.

The bout against Navarrete will be held at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

The fight has been billed as “the greatest fight in Kingaroy history”.

It will be broadcast live at the Kingaroy Hotel-Motel from 10:00am on Saturday.

The pub will also be putting on a free sausage sizzle, raffles and auctions.
