A private funeral was held at Taabinga Cemetery on May 31 for former Kingaroy Herald journalist Stephen Darracott.

Mr Darracott was born on June 17, 1943.

He began his cadetship on the Kingaroy Herald in 1960 before heading to Brisbane to work for Cumberland Newspapers. He returned to Kingaroy in 1965 as news editor on the Herald.

He was secretary of the Road Safety Council in Kingaroy from 1965-1967 and an elder of the Kingaroy Presbyterian Church from 1966-1971.

Mr Darracott also had stints on the Courier-Mail in Brisbane and was editor of the Warwick Daily News from 1973 to 1984.

In 1989, he took up a position as editorial manager at Western Publications Toowoomba and then Star Newspapers.

Mr Darracott was also formerly a part-time tutor in journalism at Queensland University and a guest lecturer at the Darling Downs College in Toowoomba.

He died in Warwick on May 25.

He is survived by his wife Joan and son James.
